The SUV was traveling south on Fairwood Avenue approaching East Innis Avenue when it crossed the centerline, according to NBC4 WCMH-TV and dayton247now.com.

Driver Dies After Pole Collision

After striking the fence, the SUV continued across a field in front of a Fairwood Avenue home and hit a utility pole on the driver's side, according to the report. The vehicle came to a stop in the field.

Emergency crews extracted the driver, who was taken to Grant Medical Center in critical condition, the outlet's account states. The adult driver was pronounced dead at 12:33 a.m., according to the same account.

Two Passengers Hospitalized in Stable Condition

The two adult passengers were also taken to Grant Medical Center and were listed in stable condition, the report notes. Police have not released further details about the driver or passengers beyond identifying them as adults.

Police have not determined why the SUV left its lane. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Ohio crash context and other Columbus cases

ODOT reported that roadway departure was among Ohio’s top five crash types leading to fatalities through October 2023, with 523 reported, according to Northwest Signal. Separate Columbus crashes reported by NBC4 WCMH-TV illustrate other outcomes: near Stelzer and Codet roads on Nov. 24, 2025, a passenger died after a Mazda6 left the roadway and struck an electric pole; in a separate crash reported Aug. 15, 2026, a driver died after a Honda CR-V left the I-270 northbound ramp from East Main Street and hit a light pole. These reports document separate cases, not a comparable year-by-year count or trend for Columbus.
