A 36-year-old nightclub security guard was shot and killed and a 27-year-old woman was wounded early Sunday when a gunman opened fire from a vehicle outside a nightclub in the 5800 block of 4th Avenue South in South Seattle. Officers responded just before 1 a.m., and within the hour investigators say they tracked down the suspect's car engulfed in flames elsewhere in South Seattle.
According to the Seattle Police Department, officers were called to the nightclub parking lot after reports of gunfire, where they found the security guard dead and the woman suffering from a gunshot wound to her leg. The shooting happened in territory covered by SPD's South Precinct.
Patrol officers rendered emergency aid to the wounded woman at the scene before Seattle Fire Department medics arrived and rushed her to Harborview Medical Center, where she was listed in serious condition, the department said. Harborview, located in Seattle's First Hill neighborhood, is Washington's only designated Level I adult and pediatric trauma center and treats critical patients from across a four-state Pacific Northwest region, per Hoodline.
Surveillance Footage Captures the Attack and the Escape
Investigators reviewing surveillance footage determined that a vehicle pulled into the nightclub parking lot and the driver opened fire multiple times from inside before fleeing the scene, the police department said. Less than an hour later, officers located what they believe was the suspect vehicle fully engulfed in flames elsewhere in South Seattle.
No arrests had been announced as of Sunday, and police have not released information on a possible motive or the identity of the shooter.
Citywide Crime Trends Offer Contrast
The homicide lands amid a broader decline in violence across Seattle this year. Shootings citywide dropped more than 20% and homicides fell over 30% in the first half of 2026 compared to the same stretch last year, per crime data reported by KING 5. Even so, KING 5 reported neighborhood disparities and increases in some areas.
Seattle went an entire month, June 2026, without a single homicide — the city's first murder-free June in 56 years, Police Chief Shon Barnes said, as reported by KOMO News.
Seattle's Camera Network
Seattle has a camera network, and investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from Sunday's shooting.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact the department's Violent Crimes Tip Line at (206) 233-5000. Officers have asked drivers to avoid the area near 4th Avenue South and use alternate routes while the investigation continues.
