Bystander CPR was reported in 42.5% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest cases nationally in 2025, while bystanders used an AED in 13.9% of public cardiac-arrest cases, according to data cited by the American Red Cross. The American Heart Association says immediate bystander CPR can double or triple a person’s chance of survival and reports a 9.1% survival-to-hospital-discharge rate for 2021 EMS-treated adult out-of-hospital cardiac arrests.
HCA Healthcare honored Southern Hills Hospital clinical nursing supervisor and ER nurse Suzie Macis with its 2026 Excellence in Nursing Award in Compassionate Care. The award is part of HCA’s annual Awards of Distinction, which the company says include a compassionate-care category. FOX5 Las Vegas reported that Macis traveled to Nashville for the recognition during the October 3–4 weekend, as described in its report on the award; HCA outlines the awards on its nursing page.
The response behind the recognition
The award follows Macis’s intervention at T-Mobile Arena in December 2025, when Jeannie Cunningham went into cardiac arrest on stairs during a Golden Knights game against the Chicago Blackhawks. FOX5 Las Vegas reported that Macis, who was attending with her husband, began chest compressions, called for paramedics and an automated external defibrillator, and continued CPR for nearly 10 minutes. She used the AED to shock Cunningham twice before emergency crews took over, according to FOX5’s account.
The Las Vegas Sun reported that Macis has worked at Southern Hills Hospital since 2007. FOX5 reported that Macis has emphasized the value of CPR training and acting when someone needs help in its coverage of the rescue and recognition.
