Southfield police are asking the public to help identify a man suspected of exposing himself and engaging in a lewd act on the third floor of Southfield Public Library earlier this month. The incident was reported at approximately 4:51 p.m. on October 9 at the library, located at 26300 Evergreen Road, and investigators say the suspect fled the area in a minivan before officers could catch up with him.

According to ClickOnDetroit, police say the man entered the library and made his way to the third floor, where he exposed himself while engaging in the lewd act. Investigators describe him as a Black man with a dark complexion, a thin build, short hair, and a beard, believed to be somewhere between his early 20s and mid-30s. He was last seen wearing a black short-sleeved shirt, gray sweatpants, and gray Crocs-style shoes before leaving in a silver or light-blue Chrysler Town & Country minivan.

The alleged conduct would qualify as aggravated indecent exposure under Michigan law. Under Michigan Penal Code section 750.335a, the enhanced penalty applies when a person is fondling specified body parts while knowingly exposing themself. The offense is a high-court misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in prison and a fine of up to $2,000.

Where the Incident Unfolded

The third floor of the Southfield Public Library isn't where most visitors expect trouble. The library serves Southfield and Lathrup Village and is open until 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, closing at 5 p.m. Friday.

Legal consequences in cases like this can vary significantly depending on circumstances. Prosecutors have not filed charges since no suspect has been identified.

Public Exposure Cases at Other Libraries

The Southfield case also fits into a pattern playing out at public libraries elsewhere this year. In October, Hoodline reported that Virginia Beach police arrested a suspect on four felony counts of indecent exposure across two library branches.

How to Help or Report Information

Southfield police are asking anyone who recognizes the man described in the investigation, or who has information about the case, to contact the department at 248-796-5500 and reference complaint number 26-35273.

The library opened a new building in 2003 and has a collection of more than 280,000 volumes.

No arrest has been announced in the case as of publication, and it remains unclear whether surveillance footage captured the suspect entering or leaving the building. Anyone with information is urged to come forward as investigators continue working to identify him.
