A passenger injured in a two-vehicle crash on US-221 near the Interstate 26 interchange in Spartanburg County has died, days after the collision that happened around 1:02 p.m. Monday, according to troopers. The South Carolina Highway Patrol has not released the victim's identity.

Troopers say a 2011 Ford Explorer was traveling southbound on US-221 and attempting a left turn onto the I-26 East entrance ramp when it collided with a northbound 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt, as reported by FOX Carolina News. The Cobalt struck the front right side of the Explorer, according to the same account. Both the Explorer's driver and passenger were taken to a hospital by EMS for treatment, and the Cobalt's driver, its only occupant, was also transported for injuries. The Explorer passenger died from those injuries on Saturday, per troopers.

What South Carolina Law Says About Left Turns

South Carolina law places clear responsibility on drivers making left turns across oncoming traffic. Under South Carolina Code § 56-5-2320, a driver turning left within an intersection or onto a highway entrance ramp must yield the right-of-way to any oncoming vehicle close enough to present an immediate hazard. The circumstances described by investigators — a left turn from US-221 onto the I-26 East ramp colliding with oncoming traffic — mirror the exact scenario the statute addresses, though troopers have not said whether any charges will be filed. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash.

A County With the State's Worst Road Toll

The crash adds to a grim tally for Spartanburg County, which recorded 74 traffic deaths in 2025, more than any of South Carolina's 46 counties, according to Spartan Weekly News. Preliminary state figures show the county had already logged 51 traffic fatalities through October 4, keeping it among the deadliest counties in South Carolina alongside Greenville, Horry and Charleston, per the South Carolina Department of Public Safety. Statewide, 673 people died in 637 fatal collisions between January 1 and October 9 this year, down from 738 deaths over the same stretch in 2025, the department reports.

Officials with the department say most fatal crashes in Spartanburg County stem from drivers failing to yield the right-of-way, driving too fast for conditions, or driving distracted, according to the Post and Courier. The newspaper also notes that rapid population growth in the county over the past five years has pushed more vehicles onto major feeder roads connecting to Interstate 26, raising collision risk at highway access points. US-221 itself functions as a major north-south corridor funneling local and commercial traffic directly into I-26 interchanges, according to HawkLaw, P.A.

Recent Pattern of Fatal Wrecks in the County

This is the latest in a string of deadly crashes Hoodline has tracked across Spartanburg County in recent months. A police chase ended in a fatal crash on Highway 221 just two days before this latest death was confirmed, and a pedestrian was killed crossing U.S. 176 elsewhere in the county the week prior. A motorcyclist also died near Wade Hampton Boulevard in the Upstate region earlier this month, while a multi-vehicle wreck shut down I-26 East in the county in August.

The Highway Patrol's investigation into Monday's crash remains ongoing, and the victim's name has not yet been made public.
