A speeding pickup truck slammed into a Houston police vehicle on the 610 Loop early Thursday as officers worked to block freeway traffic around a roadway hazard, leaving the pickup's driver dead at the scene. Police had not identified the woman, described as Hispanic and in her 20s to 30s, and said it was not yet known whether intoxication played a role in the crash.
Houston police officers had responded to a traffic hazard on the 610 Loop after a semi-truck leaked some of its payload onto the roadway, according to Click2Houston. While crews worked to clear the spill, HPD officers blocked traffic on the freeway, positioning a patrol vehicle to shield the scene before the pickup barreled into it. The affected lanes reopened earlier.
Click2Houston reported that one officer was injured, transported to a hospital and expected to be stable.
Driver Pronounced Dead, Still Unidentified
The pickup's driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and as of the initial report, police had not identified her. The same report notes investigators had not determined whether intoxication played a role in the crash.
A Familiar Risk for Officers Working Freeway Shoulders
This is not the first time this fall that an officer working a freeway incident in the Houston area has been hurt doing it. Just days earlier, on September 27, a man was fatally struck while crossing the East Freeway on foot after running out of gas, and an officer was injured in a secondary crash while blocking traffic at that scene, Click2Houston reported in a separate story.
The danger extends beyond Houston. The Officer Down Memorial Page has tracked more than 100 law enforcement officers struck and killed in traffic-related incidents throughout Texas, according to a report from NBC DFW. That same report described a Dallas police officer who was released from the hospital after a crash during a traffic stop, and a Kaufman County deputy who narrowly avoided being hit in a separate incident — part of what the station described as renewed attention to roadside safety for officers working alongside live traffic.
Texas law requires drivers approaching a stopped emergency vehicle with its lights activated to either move over a lane or slow down, a rule codified in the state's move-over statute. Whether that law factored into Thursday's crash on the 610 Loop remains unclear, as investigators had not released findings on the cause beyond the basic sequence of events.
