A Hernando County judge has sentenced 44-year-old Charles Michael Mabry to 13 life terms without the possibility of parole for crimes against three children under the age of 8. The case traces back to recordings made at his former home in Spring Hill. Prosecutors say it began with an undercover operation in neighboring Polk County.

Judge Daniel B. Merritt handed down the sentence, according to Tampa Bay Beacons, which reported the sentencing occurred on October 22. The Hernando County Sheriff's Office, in a Facebook post, announced the 13 life terms in the capital sexual battery case. A later report from Tampa Free Press described the sentences as consecutive.

28 Felony Convictions Earlier This Year

Mabry was convicted earlier this year on 28 felony counts involving three children under the age of 8, Tampa Free Press reports. Those counts included four of capital sexual battery of a child under 12 and seven of lewd and lascivious molestation of a child under 12. He was also convicted on 15 counts of promoting the sexual performance of a child, plus one count each of sexual exhibition and sexual conduct.

State Attorney Bill Gladson of the Fifth Judicial Circuit weighed in on the outcome. “Thirteen life sentences send an unmistakable message — crimes against children will be met with the full force of the law,” he said, as quoted by the same outlet.

From a Polk County Sting to a Spring Hill Home

According to Tampa Bay Beacons, the Polk County Sheriff's Office conducted an undercover operation called “Guardians of Innocence,” targeting online predators. Mabry was arrested in July 2024 following a Hernando County Sheriff's Office investigation into the possession of child pornography, the outlet reports. The Hernando County Sheriff's Office was notified of the matter by the Polk County Sheriff's Office, per the seed facts.

Investigators then served a search warrant at Mabry's home and seized electronic devices containing a large cache of child sexual abuse material. Forensic analysis uncovered recordings Mabry created between 2013 and 2015 depicting the abuse of three different children. Digital forensics later traced the location of those recordings to his former home in Spring Hill, according to the Tampa Free Press account.

Investigators identified all three victims after interviewing witnesses, the report adds. Mabry acknowledged owning the devices and living at the residence where the videos were recorded.

Who Built the Case

The prosecution was led by Assistant State Attorney Angelina Rodeo. Tampa Free Press says the case was built on a joint investigation by the Polk County Sheriff's Office and Detective Earnest of the Hernando County Sheriff's Office Major Cases Section.

What Florida Law Says About Sentences Like This

Florida's Dangerous Sexual Felony Offender Act sets a mandatory minimum of 25 years up to life in prison for qualifying offenses. For offenses committed on or after October 1, 2014, the minimum is 50 years up to life, according to Florida Statute 794.0115. The statute lists victimizing more than one person during a criminal episode as a qualifying factor.

The same statute says defendants sentenced under it are not eligible for statutory gain-time or discretionary early release before serving the minimum sentence, subject to specified clemency or medical-release provisions. The sources reviewed do not identify the statutory basis for each of Mabry's individual sentences.
