A 49-year-old Spring Valley man is behind bars after police say he stabbed a 36-year-old during a dispute outside a North Main Street business, leaving the victim bleeding so badly that officers had to apply a tourniquet before paramedics could get him to a hospital. Alex Draughn was taken into custody Wednesday, days after the attack, and now faces a felony assault charge.
According to monseyscoop.com, detectives arrested Draughn, of Spring Valley, on October 21 in connection with the stabbing outside 94 North Main Street. The attack happened the Saturday night before, October 17, at roughly 8:40 p.m., per the same report. As reported by Daily Voice, the stabbing unfolded outside the Smiley Convenience Smoke Shop at that address.
Victim Suffered Serious Blood Loss Before Rescue
Responding officers found a 36-year-old man suffering from a stab wound to his left arm along with significant bleeding, the outlet's report states. Officers immediately applied a tourniquet to control the bleeding before the victim was transported to Westchester Medical Center for further treatment, according to the same account. Police said the victim is expected to make a full recovery.
Investigators said a dispute between the victim and the suspect led to the stabbing, though the exact nature of that confrontation has not been detailed publicly. Police identified Draughn as the suspect following several days of investigation, per Daily Voice.
Charges and Court Appearance
Draughn was charged with Assault in the First Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree, the monseyscoop.com report notes. Under New York law, assault in the first degree is classified as a class B felony, according to the New York State Senate's penal code.
Draughn was arraigned before Judge Sweet in the Village of Spring Valley Justice Court and remanded to the Rockland County Jail, the report states. An earlier update from the outlet, published in the days immediately after the attack, had indicated that no arrests had been made and the investigation remained ongoing — a status that changed once detectives closed in on Draughn this week.
