Incident Lands Amid a Mixed Crime Picture Citywide
Thursday's assault comes as Stockton's overall crime trends for 2026 have moved in different directions depending on the category. Total reported incidents in the city fell 5.5% in early 2026 compared with the same period the previous year, dropping from 1,782 to 1,684, according to FOX40. Violent crime overall was down 12.5% year to date, with 450 incidents compared with 514 a year earlier, and homicides fell 40%, from five to three, per the same report.
Not every category moved downward, though. Forcible rape rose 50% year to date, climbing from 10 incidents to 15, and larceny and theft increased 6.3% even as broader property crime slipped 2.7%, FOX40's analysis found.
June's Homicide Spike Still Looms Over the City
The year's broader downward trend followed a violent stretch in June, when Stockton recorded seven homicides compared with just one during the same month in 2025, according to Stocktonia News. Eight other people were shot and survived their injuries that month, the outlet reported. Police seized more than 25 firearms during that same stretch.
Over the first six months of 2026, Stockton recorded 16 homicides compared with 18 during the same period in 2025, and nonfatal shootings dipped slightly to 43 from 48 the year before, per Stocktonia's reporting. Thursday's assault with a deadly weapon in the Civic District adds another entry to a year that has otherwise trended toward fewer violent incidents overall, even as individual cases like this one underscore that risk hasn't disappeared from the city's public spaces.
