A 64-year-old man died after being struck by one of two cars involved in a crash at Church and Stockton streets in Stockton's Seaport District on Sunday evening. Police said officers responded to the two-vehicle collision around 6:24 p.m. and found the man lying in the roadway, badly hurt from the impact.
According to fox40.com, officers arrived to find a 64-year-old man who was hit by one of the cars involved. The station reported that he was taken to a nearby hospital and died there. The Legal Examiner reported that emergency responders transported him and made lifesaving efforts. The drivers of both cars remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, police said.
What Happened at Church and Stockton Streets
The crash unfolded in the Seaport District, where Church Street meets Stockton Street. Per the same account, Stockton police have not released additional details about how the two vehicles collided or which car ultimately struck the pedestrian. Because both drivers stayed put and cooperated, investigators had direct access to witnesses from the outset, though the sequence of events leading up to the fatal impact has not been made public.
Coverage from The Legal Examiner notes that, under California's comparative negligence framework, liability in a crash like this can potentially be divided among more than one party. That outlet reported it appears possible the second car could share responsibility for the fatal outcome, and that the pedestrian's family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim against one or both drivers. Such a claim, the article states, could provide compensation for funeral expenses and the loss of the man's support and companionship.
A Pattern of Deadly Stockton Crashes
Sunday's death adds to a string of fatal roadway incidents in Stockton. In December 2024, police searched for a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian, describing the suspect vehicle as a white 2004–2006 Toyota Sienna minivan with noticeable front-end damage, according to a separate fox40.com report. In that earlier case, the victim was taken to San Joaquin General Hospital, where he later died.
Stockton has also seen multiple fatal crashes cluster within short windows of time. The same news outlet previously reported that two people died in separate car crashes within a 24-hour span, one involving a semi-truck and motorcycle and the other a hit-and-run; a 62-year-old motorcycle driver in that incident was taken to a hospital and later died. No arrests were announced in connection with either of those collisions.
California's Pedestrian Safety Numbers
The crash also lands amid broader concerns about pedestrian safety across the state. The California Office of Traffic Safety has noted that California's pedestrian fatality rate runs almost 25% higher than the national average. The same agency's traffic safety scorecard reported that statewide pedestrian fatalities fell roughly 8.8%, from 1,213 in 2022 to 1,106 in 2023.
Stockton police have not indicated whether any citations or further findings are expected in Sunday's crash. The investigation remains open, and no additional information about the circumstances of the collision has been released.
