Albuquerque is headed for a stormy Sunday, with showers and thunderstorms building through the afternoon and a high near 66 degrees. The unsettled weather could make outdoor plans a bit of a gamble.
The National Weather Service’s preliminary point forecast lists a 60% Sunday precipitation probability for Albuquerque Valley, with storms becoming more likely from midafternoon through early evening. Brief heavy downpours are possible, and the strongest storms elsewhere in central and eastern New Mexico could bring large hail and damaging winds.
For Albuquerque, Sunday night should quiet down after a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 9 p.m., with skies turning partly cloudy and temperatures dropping to around 44 degrees. A Flash Flood Watch was issued in the Sunday-morning forecast package for parts of north-central, northwest, and west-central New Mexico. The day shift would assess conditions and issue a watch for parts of the eastern plains for Sunday afternoon and night if needed; already-saturated ground could make moderate rain more troublesome.
Storms Give Way To A Warmer Week
Monday looks mostly sunny with a high near 67 and light northwest winds. Tuesday should be sunny and warmer, reaching about 70 degrees, while Wednesday stays mostly sunny with a high near 71.
Thursday remains mild and mostly sunny near 72 degrees, though a few showers could return Thursday night. Rain chances rise again Friday, when showers and thunderstorms are possible during the day and likely Friday night.
Afternoon Plans May Need A Backup
Anyone heading out Sunday afternoon should keep an eye on changing skies, especially east of the central mountain chain where storms may be stronger. Heavy rain can quickly reduce visibility and create slick roads, so drivers should avoid flooded roadways and postpone exposed outdoor activities if thunder moves in.
