A woman was found shot to death inside a home on the 4100 block of Vira Road in Stow, Ohio, on Wednesday evening, and police had not released her identity or any other details about the case by Wednesday night. Officers had originally been called to the residence to help sort out a landlord-tenant issue before the discovery turned the call into a death investigation.
According to Cleveland.com, Stow police officers arrived at the Vira Road residence at 5:23 p.m. Wednesday after being called to assist with the landlord-tenant dispute. While officers were speaking with the landlord, the woman's family members arrived and told police they were worried because they had been unable to contact her, the outlet reported.
That's when officers found the woman shot to death inside the home, per the same report. Police have not said what led to the shooting, and as of Wednesday night they had not released the victim's name, age or any other identifying details.
Investigators Still Working the Scene
Investigators remained at the scene Wednesday night, with the Summit County Medical Examiner and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisting Stow police, the report noted. Anyone with information has been asked to contact Stow detectives at 330-689-5770.
The case lands in a county where homicide numbers have been trending downward in recent years. Summit County recorded 13 homicides between January 1 and June 3, 2025, compared with 20 over the same stretch in 2024 and 22 in 2023, according to data reported by beaconjournal.com. Firearms were the cause of nine of those 13 homicides, the outlet reported, and Akron itself saw nine homicides through early June 2025, down from 18 during the same period the year before.
A Prior Stow Shooting
Stow has seen gun violence inside homes before. The Beacon Journal's report noted that 41-year-old Latoia Renee Philpott died on Jan. 27, 2025, after being shot by her partner in a murder-suicide at a Stow residence on Meadowlark Avenue; the man, Benjamin Asiedu, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in that case, per the same report.
Statewide, firearms remain the dominant factor in homicide deaths. The Ohio Violent Death Reporting System found that firearms were the leading mechanism of homicide death in Ohio in 2022, accounting for 80 percent of homicide deaths, or 711 deaths, with the state recording 886 homicide deaths overall that year, down 8.5 percent from 2021, according to the Ohio Violent Death Reporting System. Summit County alone recorded 54 homicide deaths and 84 firearm-related deaths that year, the report found.
The same 2022 state data showed that when the relationship between victim and suspect was known, 47 percent of Ohio's female homicide victims were killed by a spouse or other intimate partner, and 66 percent of female homicide deaths occurred inside a house or apartment. Separately, the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions reported that Ohio's overall gun death rate rose 23 percent in 2024 compared with 2015, and that at least 149 domestic violence-related homicides occurred in Ohio in 2023, 66 percent of them involving a firearm.
No information about a suspect, motive or weapon in the Stow case has been released, and police have not said whether the shooting is connected to any prior incident. The investigation remains active, and detectives are continuing to seek information from anyone who may know more.
