A disagreement over how a father was cheering during a youth softball game at Imperial Park turned into a brawl that left one man unconscious, according to court documents, and led to the arrests of a husband and wife now held at the Fort Bend County Jail. Sugar Land police say the fight broke out near Baseball Field No. 4 at the park on East US 90 on Saturday evening, and officers have been piecing together what happened using cellphone video captured by people who were there.
According to court documents cited by FOX 26 Houston, police were called to Imperial Park around 7:40 p.m. Saturday. Kiarious Hall told officials he was at the game cheering for his daughter's team when a man confronted him about how he was cheering just before a pitch, as reported by ABC13. A second man then stepped into the argument between Kiarious Hall and the first man.
Court documents say that second man allegedly poked Kiarious Hall in the chest, and Hall responded by punching him once in the face. The man fell, struck his head and lost consciousness, per the same account. He was taken to a nearby hospital with a head injury.
Video Allegedly Shows Water Bottle Swing
Investigators reviewed cellphone video that reportedly showed Kiarious Hall holding a metal water bottle with a handle in his right hand before swinging it and striking the second man in the face, according to the court documents. The footage also appeared to show Kiarious Hall, the first man and Jazmine Hall exchanging punches before the fight spilled into a nearby bush, where bystanders eventually broke it up.
The court documents state that Jazmine Hall became involved by throwing punches to help her husband. Witnesses at the scene spoke to police and showed video footage they had recorded of the incident, per the same documents. Police said witnesses appeared to favor whoever they recognized from their own children's teams, and noted that video footage and physical evidence were important to sorting out how the confrontation escalated.
Conflicting Accounts On Charges
Kiarious Hall told officials that the men had elbowed and poked his chest and that he was acting in self-defense, according to ABC13, though the video reviewed by officers reportedly did not depict that conduct. Jazmine Hall and Kiarious Hall were both taken into custody without incident and transported to the Fort Bend County Jail.
Jazmine Hall was arrested on a misdemeanor assault charge causing bodily injury. Accounts differ on what Kiarious Hall is facing: FOX 26 Houston reported that Jazmine Hall faces one count of assault causing bodily injury while Kiarious Hall faces two counts, but Click2Houston reported that the probable cause affidavit specified no charge against him.
Youth sports sidelines have produced other flashpoints in recent months. In New Jersey, NJ.com reported a physical altercation between coaches broke out after a 12-and-under league softball game in July, though that case involved different circumstances and no established link to the Sugar Land incident.
