A Virginia-born tacos and tapas concept has planted its first Texas flag in Sugar Land, setting up shop at Riverstone Plaza with a menu that swings from Korean beef tacos to Spanish patatas bravas. La Prensa Tacos & Tapas Bar soft-opened its Sugar Land location on Sept. 30, bringing a mashup of Latin American, Spanish and international dishes to the growing retail corridor.
The restaurant is only the second location for the brand, which got its start in Sterling, Virginia, back in late 2020, according to The Burn. That original Loudoun County shop opened in the Nokes Plaza retail center off Nokes Boulevard, per the outlet's earlier coverage, combining a fast-casual counter-service setup with a full bar and gourmet cocktails. The Sugar Land spot sits at 4821 LJ Parkway, Suite 99, according to the restaurant's own houston.laprensarestaurant.com listing.
Managing partner Samet Yuksekgonul said La Prensa soft-opened its second nationwide location in Riverstone, according to Community Impact Newspaper. The Sugar Land operation is not a franchise in the traditional sense — instead, the brand's founder, Tiptur, licensed La Prensa's name and menu to a Texas operator, The Burn reported.
A Menu That Travels Well Beyond Mexico
La Prensa bills itself as a Mexican and Spanish fusion restaurant with Virginia roots, and its Sugar Land menu leans into that identity with a global twist. Alongside standard tacos, burritos and bowls, the menu includes Korean beef tacos, Mexican street corn, shrimp burritos and tikka masala, according to Community Impact Newspaper's reporting. The restaurant's tapas lineup features pan con tomate, patatas bravas and pulpo con salsa, the same report notes.
The brand's own online menu fills in more detail on some of those dishes. It lists a Korean-style beef preparation finished with ginger soy marinade, gochujang aioli, kimchi, sesame seeds and green onions, according to laprensarestaurant.com. The same menu describes crispy fried potatoes topped with brava sauce, garlic aioli and Manchego cheese, plus a charred octopus dish finished with salsa Basquaise and balsamic reduction.
Yuksekgonul said the Sugar Land location's international offerings are meant to cater to the area's large Asian and Middle Eastern population, per Community Impact Newspaper's reporting. The restaurant's own site describes the concept more broadly as bringing together handmade tacos, bold Latin-inspired tapas and craft cocktails, with dine-in service for lunch, dinner and happy hour, plus online ordering for takeout, according to houston.laprensarestaurant.com.
From Sterling Storefront to Statewide Ambitions
At its original Virginia location, Tiptur described La Prensa as more taco-focused during the lunch hour, with dinner shifting toward tapas, wine and cocktails, The Burn reported in 2020. That split identity appears to be carrying over to Texas, where the brand is already eyeing further growth. Yuksekgonul said the team is looking at locations in Katy and the Heights, and is also opening a location in Galveston, according to Community Impact Newspaper.
Sugar Land's dining scene has seen plenty of turnover and expansion in recent months. Fast-casual Mediterranean eatery Brassica was reported in the spring to be planning its second Greater Houston location in the city, according to Community Impact Newspaper, while commercial real estate firm Rebees announced leases this past summer for Levant BBQ and another restaurant at a separate Sugar Land development, per CultureMap Houston.
For now, La Prensa's focus is on building out its presence in Texas. The company says its hopes are to expand La Prensa across the Texas region for now, according to The Burn's reporting, leaving the door open for further growth once the Sugar Land location settles in alongside the rest of Riverstone Plaza's dining lineup.
