Sunnyside Unified School District scheduled a ribbon-cutting for its new District Pool in Tucson for Monday, October 26, at 3:30 p.m. The event was set to pair the pool opening with an athletic showcase and a goodbye for graduating seniors.
The timing was no accident. According to KOLD, the ribbon-cutting was scheduled to coincide with the final swim meet of the season between Sunnyside and Desert View, giving the district a single afternoon to debut its new facility while its swim teams were scheduled to compete.
The planned overlap was expected to give the day extra meaning for the athletes involved. The meet was scheduled to include competition and an honor for seniors in their last meet, per the same report — making the event a planned send-off for swimmers finishing their final season with the program.
A Half-Million-Dollar Investment in Student Athletics
The district pool project carried a price tag of half a million dollars, with funding split between Sunnyside Unified School District and the City of Tucson, the station reported. That arrangement between the school district and the City of Tucson put a new athletic facility in the hands of a district that has been working to expand resources for its student athletes.
The investment serves a district with a long local history and a substantial student population. Sunnyside Unified says it was established in 1921 and now operates 21 campuses, serving more than 14,000 students and families in Southern Arizona. The district describes its community as culturally and linguistically rich, bordered by the Tohono O’odham Nation and Pascua Yaqui Tribe. Sunnyside Unified’s district profile also highlights athletics as part of its educational mission.
District officials framed the planned event as more than just an infrastructure milestone. The celebration was intended to recognize the investment in Sunnyside's student athletics and the people who helped make the project happen, according to the report — tying the new pool directly to the district's broader commitment to its sports programs.
What Comes Next for Sunnyside Swimmers
The planned event included a ribbon-cutting, a swim meet, and a season-ending celebration for Sunnyside's seniors.
The City of Tucson also lists a Sunnyside Pool south of Sunnyside High School. The city’s pool listing identifies the aquatic facility serving the area.
The plan was for Sunnyside's seniors to close out their high school swim careers at the season's final meet, alongside a ribbon-cutting for the new facility — a fitting bookend for a season set to end with both a ribbon and a race.
