A 30-year-old woman was not injured when a suspect attempted to carjack her and tried to stab her early Saturday on North Military Highway in Norfolk, according to police, who say she was in shock when first responders arrived. Officers responded to the 6300 block of North Military Highway around 3:10 a.m. after the woman reported that a suspect tried to force her out of her vehicle and then attacked her with a knife.
The woman told police the suspect first attempted to carjack her before trying to stab her, according to 13News Now. She was not injured in the attack but was described as being in shock when Norfolk Police and Norfolk Fire-Rescue arrived on scene. The outlet reports the investigation remains ongoing, and no suspect description has been released.
A Corridor With a History of Vehicle Crime
The 6300 block sits along a stretch of North Military Highway that has drawn repeated police attention in recent years. In September 2023, the City of Norfolk issued a public safety warning naming that exact block as one of four areas where suspects were flagging down drivers in parking lots to run financial phone scams.
Violent vehicle crime has also hit the corridor before. The city reported that a 36-year-old man was sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to two gunpoint carjackings committed along North Military Highway in April 2024, one of which happened in a Sonic drive-in parking lot. And less than two weeks before Saturday's incident, Norfolk Police investigated a separate armed carjacking on Premium Outlets Boulevard, in which a gunman posed as an acquaintance to hijack a vehicle outside a local hotel — a case Hoodline detailed in its report on the gunman posing as acquaintance carjacking.
What Virginia Law Says About Carjacking Attempts
Under Virginia Code § 18.2-58.1, a completed carjacking — seizing control of a vehicle through violence, assault, or threats with a deadly weapon — is a felony carrying a prison sentence of 15 years to life, according to the Hampton Roads Defense Group. An attempted carjacking or attempted robbery, by contrast, is charged as a felony carrying a prison term of 2 to 10 years along with potential fines up to $100,000, per Moore, Christoff & Siddiqui, PLLC.
Norfolk Violent Crime Trends
Norfolk Police data shows the city's overall violent crime fell 3% year-to-date in 2026 compared to 2025, with 517 reported incidents against 532 the prior year.
It is not yet known whether Flock cameras or nearby commercial surveillance captured footage of Saturday's suspect or a getaway vehicle. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Norfolk Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP or submit an anonymous tip through the P3 Tips app.
