A Cadillac SUV slammed into a group of pedestrians on Gibbsboro Road in Lindenwold on Tuesday afternoon, sending six teenagers to hospitals and forcing one critically injured victim to be flown out by medical helicopter. The crash happened around 2:12 p.m. in the area of Gibbsboro Road between Cooper and Emerson avenues, and the driver was taken into police custody at the scene.
According to 6abc Philadelphia, Chopper 6 video showed the Cadillac SUV stopped on the sidewalk with windshield damage, while first responders were seen talking to people sitting by the side of the road. The outlet reported that the circumstances surrounding the crash were not yet known. In the immediate aftermath, the Lindenwold Fire Department told drivers to avoid that stretch of Gibbsboro Road and set up a landing zone for the medevac helicopter, according to CBS News.
A Corridor With a Troubled History
The stretch of roadway where Tuesday's crash occurred is not unfamiliar with tragedy. The intersection of East Gibbsboro Road and South Emerson Avenue was the site of a fatal pedestrian crash in May 2025, when a person crossing the road late at night was struck and killed, per GLK Law. Gibbsboro Road functions as a major suburban thoroughfare through Lindenwold, lined with residential housing and multi-family apartment buildings.
The crash also follows a string of recent, severe collisions involving vulnerable road users in the borough. Just two months ago, 46-year-old Lindenwold resident Erica Beeks was killed on nearby Laurel Road after being hit on an e-bike by an SUV driver, who was subsequently charged with second-degree reckless death by auto and driving under the influence, New Jersey 101.5 reported. The Camden County Prosecutor's Office investigates fatal vehicle incidents of this kind in the borough.
County and State Safety Efforts
Local authorities have been working to address the pattern. The Camden County Prosecutor's Office launched a multi-agency traffic safety initiative in March 2024, partnering with the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety to target aggressive driving, distracted driving, and pedestrian safety across high-traffic corridors in the county, after four years of rising regional vehicular casualties.
Statewide, the picture has been improving. Pedestrian fatalities across New Jersey dropped nearly 24%, falling from 230 deaths in 2024 to 175 in 2025, according to the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, with overall traffic fatalities also down 15% over the same period. Even so, researchers at Rutgers University's Voorhees Transportation Center have found that New Jersey logs more than 5,700 pedestrian and bicycle crashes over multi-year periods — a reflection, researchers note, of suburban roadways that often lack adequate traffic calming for pedestrians.
What Happens Next
As of Tuesday afternoon, the circumstances that led the Cadillac SUV onto the sidewalk remained unknown, and no charges had been announced. The Lindenwold area has seen other recent headlines, including a fatal train strike near Pinelawn Avenue last month. Hoodline will continue monitoring for updates from the Lindenwold Police Department and the Camden County Prosecutor's Office regarding potential charges against the driver and the condition of the critically injured victim.
