A larceny at the Walmart on Brockport-Spencerport Road in Sweden has Monroe County deputies asking the public for help identifying a person caught up in the case. The incident happened Wednesday at 6:25 p.m. at the store located at 6265 Brockport-Spencerport Road, and investigators have released a photo of someone they are trying to identify.
Deputies Release Photo, Ask Public for Tips
According to Newport Dispatch, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office is seeking to identify a person connected with the larceny investigation at the store, and deputies have released a photo of that individual as part of the effort. The case has been assigned reference number CR #26-191008, and anyone with information is asked to email the sheriff's office and reference that case number. The report does not identify the person in the photo by name, age or gender, and it does not say what merchandise was allegedly taken or whether anyone has been arrested in connection with the incident.
This is not the first time deputies have had to respond to theft reports at this particular Walmart. In July 2025, a man allegedly stole items from the same Brockport-Spencerport Road store before heading to a nearby Lowe's on Owens Road, where employees caught him trying to steal more merchandise, the station's report states. He fled on foot, prompting an extensive search that included a helicopter, drones and K-9 units, with deputies shutting down a stretch of Brockport-Spencerport Road to track him down.
Brighton Man's Lengthy Record Surfaced in Earlier Case
That search eventually led to the arrest of Christopher Cole, 58, of Brighton, who was charged with six counts of petit larceny, per the same account. He was arraigned the following Thursday morning and released to pre-trial services. The sheriff's office said at the time that Cole had 16 prior misdemeanor convictions and two open felony cases, including a robbery case in Chili. 13WHAM also posted an update on the case on X, noting the man faced charges following the theft at Walmart and the attempted theft at the nearby Lowe's.
Earlier this year, a separate pair of suspects was linked to a string of Walmart thefts spanning multiple counties. The Orleans County Sheriff's Office said the Albion Walmart reported more than $1,400 in merchandise, mostly electronics, stolen on Jan. 6, with investigators saying the same male and female suspects were also involved in thefts at Walmart stores in Batavia and in Brockport in Sweden, according to 13WHAM. Kirk Thomas, 41, and Nevada Nichols, 33, both of Batavia, were arrested on Jan. 12 in connection with those thefts, and search warrants executed by Orleans and Monroe County investigators led to the recovery of stolen property.
Weeks later, newyorkupstate.com reported that investigators believed the same suspects were tied to thefts at Walmart locations in Albion, Brockport, Sweden, Batavia and surrounding areas, amounting to thousands of dollars in stolen merchandise. It is not established whether Wednesday's incident at the Sweden Walmart is connected to any of these earlier cases.
Retail Theft's Toll on Monroe County
Retail theft has been a persistent concern for Monroe County law enforcement. A Monroe County Sheriff's essay estimated that a very conservative figure for annual sales-tax revenue lost to larcenies countywide was $1.8 million, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. Separately, the New York Criminal Justice Knowledge Bank reports that since formal implementation began in 2023, the Monroe County Crime Analysis Center has tracked an 18 percent decrease in larceny incidents from 2023 to 2024, and a 31 percent decrease from 2023 to 2025. Larceny is counted among the seven Index offenses used nationally to gauge overall crime volume, per Open Data NY.
For now, the Sweden case remains open, and deputies have not said whether the person in the released photo has been identified or located. Anyone with information about Wednesday's incident is asked to contact the Monroe County Sheriff's Office and reference case number CR #26-191008.
