Syracuse police are asking the public for help finding a 21-year-old man wanted in connection with a fatal shooting that left a North Side home riddled with questions a month later. Joshua A. Cruz Jr. is described as approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing 115 pounds, and investigators are warning residents not to approach him if spotted.
Cruz is wanted in connection with the shooting death of Kayvion Davis, also 21 and of Syracuse, according to syracuse.com. Davis was fatally shot on Sept. 12 inside a home at 115 S. Alvord St. on the city’s North Side, the outlet reports, and as of Thursday, no arrests had been announced in his killing.
Police consider Cruz armed and dangerous and have urged anyone who encounters him not to approach or attempt to contact him directly. Officers are instead asking residents with information about his whereabouts to call the department’s Criminal Investigations Division at 315-442-5222, per the same report. The Syracuse station CNY Central also reported on the search, noting that police had not detailed which homicide investigation connects to Cruz beyond identifying him as wanted.
What Happened Inside the Alvord Street Home
Officers were called to 115 S. Alvord St. after a 911 caller reported that someone had entered the home and shot their friend, according to the same syracuse.com account of events that night. When police arrived, they found Davis suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the leg, the outlet reported at the time, and he was later pronounced dead.
As of Sept. 19, more than a week after the shooting, no arrests had been announced in connection with Davis’s death, according to a separate syracuse.com report that included reflections from his mother. That earlier story also noted that the same Alvord Street address had been the site of a drug bust months before the homicide — in August, state police seized cocaine, fentanyl, crack cocaine and other drugs there, arresting three people, according to syracuse.com archives cited in that report.
Investigation Still Open a Month Later
More than a month has passed since Davis was killed, and the case remains unsolved. Police have not said whether Cruz has been charged or whether an arrest warrant has been issued in connection with the homicide; the public appeal for help locating him is the most recent development investigators have made public.
For now, Syracuse police are relying on the community to help close the gap. Anyone with information on Cruz’s location is asked to call the Criminal Investigations Division, and officers have stressed that the public should leave any contact with him to law enforcement given the armed-and-dangerous warning.
