At least one person was injured Tuesday evening when two vehicles collided in a T-bone-style crash at the intersection of Route 356 and River Landing Drive in Allegheny Township, and a medical helicopter was called to the scene for one of those involved.
Westmoreland County dispatchers said emergency crews were called to the intersection at 5:03 p.m., according to WPXI. The outlet reported that the crash involved two vehicles striking each other in a T-bone configuration, and that a medical helicopter was summoned to fly one injured person from the scene.
A regional air-medical provider, STAT MedEvac, is the critical-care transport arm of the Center for Emergency Medicine of Western Pennsylvania, a nonprofit directed by a consortium of UPMC hospitals. The service says it operates 18 helicopter bases in Pennsylvania and neighboring states. The crash report did not identify which medical helicopter operator was called to Tuesday’s scene. STAT MedEvac’s organizational background describes its role and service area.
As of WPXI's report, the station was still working to determine whether anyone else was hurt in the collision. No information on the identities, ages, or conditions of those involved, nor any details about what caused the crash, had been released.
Intersection crashes accounted for 38% of all reported crashes in Pennsylvania in 2024, while deaths in intersection crashes rose to 321 from 301 the year before. Those statewide figures provide broader context for a collision at an intersection, but do not establish what caused Tuesday’s crash or indicate a trend specific to Allegheny Township. PennDOT compiles the figures from crash reports submitted by law-enforcement agencies. The 2024 Pennsylvania Crash Facts report includes the statewide totals.
A Familiar Stretch of Road for Serious Crashes
This is not the first time this stretch of Route 356 in Allegheny Township has seen a crash requiring an airlift. Back in November 2019, two people were flown to a hospital following a crash on the same roadway, per a separate WPXI report at the time.
The corridor has also seen other serious incidents in recent years. In November 2024, a one-car crash on Route 356 brought down a utility pole and wires, shutting the road down, according to TribLive Community. Days later, an SUV went off Route 356 near the Crain Road intersection, injuring the driver, as WPXI reported separately at the time. That same month, three people were hurt in another crash in the Piper Road area of Route 356 that closed a section of the road for roughly an hour, per TribLive Community's account.
In December 2024, a 29-year-old woman was killed in a crash on Route 356 near the River Forest area of Allegheny Township, according to WTAE, which reported that the county coroner was called to the scene.
Whether Tuesday's crash will be linked to similar causes as those earlier incidents remains unknown, and no citations or arrests connected to the collision have been reported.
