Hillsborough County deputies rushed to a Tampa home on the 6220 North block of 44th Street at around 4:31 a.m. on September 18 after neighbors reported gunfire, and what they found inside turned a routine domestic violence call into a sprawling weapons and drug bust. Deputies contacted 45-year-old Marcello Hardrick at the scene, and investigators say the ensuing search uncovered nine firearms along with a stash of cocaine, methamphetamine and prescription drugs.
According to tampafp.com, investigators allege Hardrick battered a victim before stepping outside and firing several rounds from a handgun in the front yard. Authorities said no one was struck by the gunfire and no property was damaged, even as the shots sent deputies into the overnight hours to secure the block. Detectives later obtained a search warrant for the residence, a step that led straight to the cache of weapons and narcotics, per the same outlet.
A Search Warrant Opens the Door to a Bigger Case
What began as five charges tied directly to the disturbance — including domestic-violence battery, firearm or ammunition possession by a felon, discharging a firearm and possessing a firearm during a felony — quickly multiplied. The site's report states that investigators filed 33 additional charges against Hardrick, described by authorities as an 11-time convicted felon, after the search of the home turned up the weapons and drugs. In total, WFLA reports Hardrick was arrested on more than 30 charges.
Among the additional counts, per tampafp.com's breakdown, were seven counts of felon in possession of a firearm and one count of felon in possession of ammunition. Hardrick also faces 12 counts of armed possession of a Schedule II controlled substance with intent to sell or deliver and two counts involving Schedule I substances, the outlet reports. The charges further include one count each of armed trafficking in cocaine between 28 and 200 grams and armed trafficking in amphetamine involving 200 grams or more, according to the same account.
Sheriff Ties Case to Office's Repeat-Offender Push
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said a man with eleven prior felony convictions had no business possessing a single firearm, let alone nine, along with a stockpile of narcotics, according to West Orlando News. Chronister praised detectives for turning a domestic violence call into the dismantling of a threat to the community, the outlet reported, and said the sheriff's office will continue pursuing violent repeat offenders while working to pull illegal guns and drugs off the streets.
The case lands alongside broader crime data the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office released for 2025. Overall crime in the county declined 12.79% compared with the previous year, based on FBI NIBRS figures cited by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. Homicides dropped 55%, from 49 in 2024 to 22 in 2025, while overall violent crime fell 13.85% and firearm-related violent crime declined 10.55% over the same period, the agency reported.
Charges Still Pending as Investigation Continues
Hardrick's charge sheet, as tallied by tampafp.com, also includes one count of possession of a drug without a prescription, one count of drug paraphernalia possession, and one count of owning, leasing or renting property for the purpose of trafficking, selling or manufacturing a controlled substance. He additionally faces one count of possession for the purpose of trafficking, selling or manufacturing a controlled substance and two counts of criminal mischief of $1,000 or more, per the same source.
Florida law under Florida Statute 790.23 addresses the unlawful possession of firearms, ammunition or electric weapons by convicted felons, while Chapter 893 of the Florida Statutes governs ownership or possession of property used for trafficking or manufacturing controlled substances. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says its investigation into Hardrick remains active.
