Dogs in tutus, superhero capes and pumpkin onesies are taking over Tampa's waterfront today as Sparkman Wharf hosts its Howl-O-Ween dog costume contest, with registration opening at 3 p.m. and the competition running from 4 to 6 p.m. across several categories.
Sparkman Wharf's beloved dog costume contest is back, according to thatssotampa.com, which reports that registration kicks off at 3 p.m. before the competition begins at 4 p.m. The event is also listed on jetsetpets.com's roundup of Tampa Bay's dog-friendly Halloween happenings, which pegs the Howl-O-Ween Dog Contest at Sparkman Wharf for October 18. As WTSP noted, the Howl-O-Ween party is happening today at the Channelside destination.
Not every listing agrees on the exact timing, though. A Patch calendar entry instead places the contest on Oct. 19, with registration at noon at The Modern Paws and the contest starting at 1 p.m. on the lawn. The scheduling mismatch between outlets means pet owners heading to the wharf should double-check details before loading up the car with a costume and a leash.
What's Planned on the Lawn
Whichever day it lands on, the party is shaping up to be a packed one. The pet costume competition features a variety of costume categories, according to the station's report, and pop-up vendors are expected from Modern Paws, Pugs & Petals, PetWants and the Mercyful Project. Modern Paws itself doesn't typically sell full costumes but stocks accessories and hosts an annual Howl-O-Ween Dog Party with a costume contest on the Sparkman Wharf Lawn, per the same account from jetsetpets.com.
Early birds get a bonus: the first 50 guests to register score a complimentary treat bag, according to thatssotampa.com. Sparkman Wharf sits at 615 Channelside Drive, Unit 115B, in Tampa, and organizers point attendees to sparkmanwharf.com and themodernpaws.com for additional details, per tampabay28.com's coverage of the event.
A Tradition With a Shifting Schedule
This isn't Sparkman Wharf's first costume parade. In 2024, the venue hosted its annual Howl-O-Ween Dog Costume Contest on a Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m., with registration beginning at noon at The Modern Paws, according to WFLA. That year's categories included Best Dressed Pup and Best Dressed Human & Pup Duo, giving owners just as much incentive to dress up as their dogs.
By 2025, the event had shifted again, running from noon to 3 p.m. on a Sunday in October, with prizes once more going to the best-dressed dogs and human-dog duos, as Creative Loafing Tampa Bay reported at the time. The first 50 pups to sign up that year also received a complimentary treat bag, a perk that has carried over into this year's event as well.
With three different years producing three different start times, Sparkman Wharf's Howl-O-Ween gathering has become something of a moving target on the calendar. Still, the core appeal hasn't changed: a free, dog-friendly afternoon on Tampa's waterfront where costumed pups and their owners can compete for bragging rights before the trick-or-treating season officially begins.
