The men’s and women’s restrooms inside the Centro Ybor 16th Street parking garage have been gutted and rebuilt from the ground up, according to the City of Tampa. The newly renovated facilities are now open to the public, giving visitors to the Ybor City entertainment district a freshly overhauled stop during their next trip downtown.
The city detailed the project in a Facebook post published Wednesday, crediting its JOC team with completing a full restroom renovation while a separate facilities team installed new underground plumbing beneath the structure. Together, the two efforts amounted to a complete teardown and rebuild of both restrooms rather than a cosmetic refresh.
Why the City Is Touting the Upgrade
City officials framed the restroom overhaul as part of a broader push to use tax dollars wisely, improve local infrastructure and enhance quality of life for residents and visitors alike, per the same Facebook announcement. For a garage that sees steady foot traffic from Ybor City’s bars, restaurants and event venues, functional restrooms are a small but visible piece of that infrastructure pitch.
The Centro Ybor garage sits at 1500 E. 5th Avenue, bounded by North 15th Street and North 16th Street, according to the Ybor City Chamber of Commerce. Garage signage also lists a posted clearance of 7 feet 2 inches for vehicles entering the structure, a detail confirmed by the chamber’s parking listing for the facility.
What Remains Unclear
The city’s post does not specify the project’s cost, how it was funded, or which contractor carried out the JOC-led restroom work. It also does not give a construction start date or a precise completion timeline beyond the announcement itself, leaving some of the finer logistical details of the rebuild unaddressed for now.
