Eight local restaurants are rolling their best burgers into Pechanga Resort Casino this Saturday for the fifth annual Battle of the Burgers, a noon-to-3 p.m. showdown that doubles as a fundraiser for local high school culinary students. Corkfire Kitchen, Crush & Brew/Archive, Ebullition Brew Works Pub & Grill, Hendo's Barrel House, Mad Madeline's Grill, Pinnacle at Falkner Winery, and The Gambling Cowboy will all serve up signature creations built specifically for the event, held at 45000 Pechanga Parkway near Temecula.

The competition is co-organized by nonprofit destination marketing group Visit Temecula Valley, Pechanga Resort Casino, and the Temecula Valley Unified School District, according to the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin. Ticket sales and proceeds flow directly into the district's Career Technical Education Culinary Arts pathway, a now-familiar arrangement for an event that began five years ago as a joint push by the tourism, tribal hospitality, and public education sectors, per Patch.

Last year's event sold 400 tickets and raised more than $12,000 for the district's culinary program, and organizers say the event has brought in roughly $30,000 total over the past three years, according to the Daily Bulletin's reporting. Jenni Huter, the district's career technical education work-based learning facilitator, said the supplemental funds give students an elevated industry-based experience, letting them work alongside professional chefs, develop their own recipes, and push each other through the culinary process, the paper reports.

Five Judges, One Pair of Competing Tracks

This year's judging panel includes Temecula Mayor Jessica Alexander and digital creator Priscilla Tapia. Norma Marlowe said, per the news release cited by the Daily Bulletin, that the five hungry judges will taste-test the entries to determine the Judges' Choice winner, while attendees separately vote for a People's Choice favorite.

Tapia, who runs the Temecula Foodies digital platform and is judging for a third year, said the event celebrates more than just burgers. The event splits into two distinct tracks: local restaurants compete head-to-head in the burger category, while Pechanga chefs and Temecula area high school students team up to make the loaded fries, with the students acting as executive chefs and the resort's professional chefs serving as their sous chefs for the day.

Last Year's Winners Set the Bar

Burgers at the 2025 competition included Ebullition Brew Works Pub & Grill's Rez Burger and Corkfire Kitchen's Smokehouse Burger. Other 2025 burger entries included a Wagyu creation and the Wham Bam Thank You Jam, which stacked a beef patty with roasted jalapeños, bacon, onion straws, cream cheese, garlic aioli, and roasted bell pepper on a homemade brioche bun, according to the Daily Bulletin.

On the fries side, last year's student-designed entries carried names like Taste of Asia, Mexican Street Corn Asada, and Smoked Carne Asada. Student participants from the 2025 event included Megan Ta, Deyna Rodriguez, Jaydan Colgan, Adrian Torres, Andia Shirvani, Sophia Goodin, and Patty Rico, the paper reported.

Burgers Stick Around Through the Holidays

Diners who miss Saturday's event won't be entirely out of luck. Event rules require every competing restaurant to keep its entry on the active menu from October 10 through December 31, giving the community months to sample this year's creations, according to Visit Temecula Valley. Winning burgers from past years have likewise stayed on their restaurants' menus for the remainder of the year, the Daily Bulletin noted, giving competing eateries an extended marketing boost while supporting the school district's program.

The fundraiser arrives as Temecula Valley's tourism economy keeps expanding. Direct travel spending in the valley hit an estimated $1.2 billion in 2025, up 1.7% year over year, per a Dean Runyan Associates study prepared for Visit Temecula Valley. Overnight travel climbed 1.3% to roughly 1.57 million person-trips, contributing to an overall annual visitor footprint of 3.4 million tourists across the valley.

Hosting the showdown is Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula, which regularly partners with local civic groups on regional charity events.

At Temecula Valley High School, students can earn five college credits after Culinary Arts 1 and 2, a Food Handlers Card in Culinary Arts 2, and optional ServSafe certification in Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management, according to the Temecula Valley Unified School District. The culinary program is part of the district's career technical education offerings, turning Saturday's fries-and-burgers showdown into something more than a one-off taste test for the students stepping into the kitchen.
