A Texas fan has been permanently banned from Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium after he was caught on video flipping off Florida players and yelling obscenities following the Longhorns' 27-24 loss on Saturday. Florida staff members held some players back to keep the postgame confrontation from escalating further, and no fight broke out.
Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte announced the ban and issued a personal apology, saying the fan's conduct did not reflect the university's values, according to USA Today. “I want to personally apologize to the University of Florida and its entire football program,” Del Conte said, adding that the fan had been permanently banned from Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. Del Conte also wrote that “we pride ourselves on sportsmanship and treating our opponents with respect,” framing the fan's actions as a failure to represent Texas with class.
The confrontation unfolded after Florida closed out a 27-24 win over Texas, a game the Longhorns led 17-3 before Florida ripped off 24 unanswered points to seize control, per KXAN. An unidentified fan wearing burnt orange went onto the field and made the gesture at Florida players, who approached him before a team employee stepped in to separate the two sides, Sports Illustrated reports in its account of the incident, which can be viewed at the SI.com report on the matter.
Video Capture and Unanswered Questions
The moment was caught on camera by FOX 7 video photographer Anthony Geronimo, who posted the footage on October 17, the same day as the game, according to the same SI.com account. The clip quickly went viral, with social media users widely condemning the fan's behavior, the Austin American-Statesman reported in its report on the incident, which was published as part of its ongoing Longhorns football coverage.
How exactly the fan reached the playing surface has not been confirmed. Essentially Sports, which covered the incident, noted that multiple possibilities exist but that “neither possibility has been confirmed,” per its report at EssentiallySports. The fan's identity also remains unknown in all available reporting.
Fan Conduct Rules and Past Penalties
Texas Athletics' own fan guide instructs spectators to refrain from obscene or abusive language or gestures and states that those who create an unsafe environment or enter the playing surface without university authorization will be removed from the facility, according to the guide posted on texaslonghorns.com. The guide also says fans are expected to show respect and courtesy toward opposing student-athletes, coaches and game officials.
Texas has faced consequences for fan behavior before. In 2024, Texas fans threw objects onto the field during a disputed pass-interference call against Georgia, and the SEC fined the Longhorns $250,000 for the incident even though no individual fans were ultimately punished, per the same USA Today report. Elsewhere in the conference, the SEC fined Kentucky $500,000 after fans stormed the field following a 35-34 overtime win over LSU, EssentiallySports noted in its coverage.
Saturday's loss marked Texas' second consecutive defeat to an unranked opponent, dropping the Longhorns to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in SEC play. Texas is set to host No. 7 Ole Miss at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday night, with kickoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.
