According to KCRA, a fire tore through a partially abandoned building near J and 8th streets in downtown Sacramento just after 4 a.m. Thursday, growing into a third alarm as crews battled heavy smoke, unstable floors, and the rescue of a woman trapped on the second floor. Two firefighters were later sent to the hospital after the grueling response.
The Sacramento Fire Department said heavy, cold smoke poured from the second floor of the building, according to KCRA. Crews broke windows to get inside and fight the flames, but the structure itself posed its own danger: a fire official told the station there were holes inside, “which makes it challenging because now you have the potential for firefighters to fall through those holes.”
Those hazards came on top of the physical toll of the fight. Two firefighters were sent to the hospital for symptoms of exhaustion, the fire department said, though officials reported no significant injuries overall, per the same account.
Woman Rescued by Ladder as Smoke Blocked Her Exit
A woman working on the second floor found herself cut off when smoke filled the hallway she would normally have used to escape. Firefighters ended up flooding the stairwell and instead brought a ladder to pull her out through a window from the outside, KCRA reported. According to CBS Sacramento, the woman said she had smelled smoke before firefighters arrived, and crews searched the building after knocking down the fire and found no one else injured.
CBS Sacramento, citing its own reporting on the blaze, identified the structure as the Porter Building at 918 8th St., near J Street, describing heavy fire coming from a building that houses several businesses. The outlet's reporting also noted that the fire affected light rail service through the area as crews worked the scene.
Street Closures Snarl Downtown Traffic
The fire response shut down several streets in the area, the fire department said. J Street was blocked at 7th Street, and 8th Street was closed between I and J streets, according to CBS Sacramento's reporting. KCRA likewise reported that several streets nearby were blocked while crews worked to control the blaze.
Both the cause of the fire and the extent of damage to the businesses inside remained unclear in the immediate aftermath, as reported by CBS Sacramento. The incident recalls an earlier downtown Sacramento fire in June 2024 that damaged two businesses, though officials have not tied the two events together.
