Three people were arrested within hours of an August shooting that sent bullets through two homes on Eastwood Drive in Wingate. Shauntelle Staton, Oquavyon McBride and Z'nyha McClendon faced charges in the case.

What Happened on Eastwood Drive

Deputies were called to the 1100 block of Eastwood Drive in Wingate on Aug. 19, after shots were fired into two homes in the neighborhood. The sheriff's office reported that no injuries resulted from the shooting, despite the damage to both residences.

The sheriff's office said the three suspects — Shauntelle Staton, Oquavyon McBride and Z'nyha McClendon — were arrested within hours of the shooting. During the investigation, detectives seized a vehicle believed to have been used in the shooting and recovered three firearms from an apartment.

The Enquirer Journal reported that McBride faced two counts each of possession of a firearm by a felon and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling, plus one count of conspiracy and a parole violation. It said Staton and McClendon each faced charges of aiding and abetting firearm by felon, felony conspiracy, and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling. The paper reported that McBride and Staton were held without bond; McClendon was not listed on the jail roster, and no bond appeared to have been set or paid.

How State Law Classifies the Charge

North Carolina law classifies a willful or wanton discharge of a qualifying weapon into an occupied dwelling as a Class D felony, according to the North Carolina General Assembly.

Other August Shootings

In August, Union County deputies and Monroe police investigated other drive-by shootings that authorities believed were gang-related. One struck an occupied home on Taylor Street in the Wingate area with numerous rounds, while another sent roughly 50 rounds into a second occupied residence on Neptune Way, according to the sheriff's office.

In a separate case, the sheriff's office said detectives arrested and charged 19-year-old Jaylen Richardson and 21-year-old Jaden Satterfield of Monroe, along with a third suspect under 18, with multiple felonies including attempted murder and shooting into an occupied dwelling. The sheriff's office has not said whether that case is connected to the Eastwood Drive shooting.

The Eastwood Drive investigation remains active as detectives continue working to identify anyone else who may have been involved.
