Five people were hospitalized, three of them critically, after a three-car crash near 50th Street and Saddle Creek Road in Omaha on Sunday evening. The collision happened around 6:45 p.m. in midtown Omaha.

According to KETV, Omaha police reported that three cars were involved in the wreck, and five people were sent to the hospital. Three were transported with critical injuries, while two others were taken in with serious injuries. Roads in the area were closed while crews cleaned up the scene, and police have not said what caused the crash or whether anyone will be cited.

A Corridor With a Troubled History

This is not the first serious crash to hit this stretch of Saddle Creek Road in recent months. Just over a week earlier, Hoodline reported that a pedestrian was critically injured late Friday near a Mega Saver on Northwest Radial Highway, in a corridor carrying up to 30,000 vehicles a day and a documented history of one traffic fatality per year. The area has also seen a multi-vehicle crash that shut down traffic at Saddle Creek Road and California Street on June 6, 2026, according to a report from a personal injury attorney's office.

Vision Zero Omaha's safety action planning includes high-injury corridors. Omaha adopted the Vision Zero program in 2023, with a goal of eliminating traffic deaths by 2045 and reducing serious injuries citywide.

City Already Studying the Corridor

City traffic planners are not standing still on the issue. The City of Omaha and Omaha Vision Zero are partners in the Military Avenue, NW Radial Highway and Cuming Street Corridor Study, according to FHUeng. The study includes 19 signalized locations and three unsignalized locations, including 50th Street and NW Radial Highway near Saddle Creek Road, and aims to identify future improvements. Public feedback has included speeding among its topics.

The corridor has also seen significant public investment aimed at separating pedestrians from vehicle traffic. In May 2024, federal and local officials announced a $2 million U.S. Department of Transportation grant to build a dedicated pedestrian walkway over Saddle Creek Road near UNMC, according to the UNMC Newsroom. That project was paired with additional pedestrian bridge plans over Leavenworth Street to improve safety around the UNMC campus.

Redevelopment Near Saddle Creek

In March 2022, the Omaha City Council approved preliminary plans for a $44 million mixed-use redevelopment near Saddle Creek Road and Pacific Street, adding 195 residential units, as reported by The Reader.

Statewide, Nebraska logged 19 traffic fatalities across 15 crashes in January 2026 alone, with nearly half of the deceased vehicle occupants unbelted, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

Sunday's crash came months after the January 2026 fatal crashes and sent five people to the hospital, with no fatalities reported. It arrives as city officials weigh how aggressively to re-engineer the Saddle Creek corridor. Omaha police have not said what caused the three-car collision or whether any citations will follow, leaving the question of responsibility unresolved for now even as the broader debate over the road's design continues.
