Three people were shot late Thursday night in an overflow parking lot in South Dallas, and police gave conflicting information about how badly they were hurt. Officers responded to the 2500 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard around 11:30 p.m. and found all three victims suffering from gunshot wounds.
According to WFAA, police on the scene said the three injured people were expected to survive. That same outlet also reported police describing the victims' conditions as unknown, leaving the extent of their injuries unclear as of Friday morning. The cause of the shooting remains under investigation, and no further details about what led to the gunfire have been released.
Third Shooting to Hit South Dallas in Recent Weeks
Thursday night's shooting is at least the third gunfire incident to strike South Dallas in a matter of weeks. Just 11 days earlier, gunfire broke out just after 1 a.m. outside the Little World convenience store in the 4,600 block of Malcolm X Boulevard, according to prior Hoodline reporting. In that incident, a customer was injured in the crossfire and bullets nearly struck a 1-year-old child who was inside the store at the time. Police were seeking three men captured on surveillance video in connection with that shooting, and the same report noted that two people were shot in the parking lot outside that same store back in June 2020, with both victims reported in stable condition.
A separate South Dallas shooting near South Barry Avenue left at least six people injured, with three victims taken by Dallas Fire-Rescue to a hospital and three others self-transporting, per FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth. Investigators believe a driver and someone in a crowd exchanged gunfire before the fleeing vehicle crashed into a light pole, though none of the injuries from that incident were considered life-threatening.
Stray Bullet Also Struck Transit Officer Nearby
A DART-contracted transit security officer was also struck in the leg by a stray bullet during a separate shooting in South Dallas, according to CBS Texas. DART said that shooting occurred off its property near an MLK station and that no passengers or other employees were injured.
City Data Shows Overall Crime Decline
The spate of South Dallas shootings comes even as citywide crime statistics point in the opposite direction. Dallas police reported 48,862 total offenses in 2025, down from 54,524 the year before, according to The Dallas Morning News. The department also recorded 141 homicides in 2025, its lowest count since 2015, and violent crime overall fell 12% to 8,020 offenses from 9,117 in 2024.
Murder and nonnegligent manslaughter incidents dropped 23% from 184 in 2024 to 141 in 2025, the newspaper reported, a decline that tracks with a broader national trend. The Council on Criminal Justice found homicides fell 21% from 2024 to 2025 across 35 large cities with usable data. Dallas police have credited part of the improvement to a data-driven hot-spot policing strategy implemented in spring 2021 that concentrates patrols and enforcement in areas where violence is most frequent.
