A mystery vehicle triggered a chain-reaction crash involving three cars in Jefferson Township, and two of the drivers took off before anyone could get their information, according to police. No injuries were reported, but the incident has left investigators trying to sort out conflicting details about exactly when and where it happened.

According to Butler Eagle, state police are investigating a hit-and-run involving three vehicles that caused a head-on crash on September 20 in Jefferson Township. The outlet reported the crash happened around 1:40 p.m. near the intersection of North Pike and Bonniebrook roads. A separate account from ButlerRadio.com, however, places the crash on September 27 at the intersection of Bonniebrook and Route 356 — a discrepancy that remains unresolved between the two reports.

Both accounts describe a crash involving three vehicles, with the first two vehicles fleeing the scene, despite the conflicting dates and locations. Butler Eagle reported that an unidentified vehicle swerved into the opposite lane after a Ford Escape merged in front of it, then struck another car head-on.

Two Drivers Took Off, One Called Police

Police said both the unknown vehicle and the Ford Escape fled the scene, leaving only the third driver behind to deal with the aftermath. Butler Eagle reported that the driver of that third vehicle, a Nissan Versa, called police to report the crash.

No injuries were reported in the crash, according to the same account. With two of the three vehicles gone before officers arrived, state police provided information about the hit-and-run as the investigation into Jefferson Township continues.

A Familiar Stretch of Road

Route 356 through Jefferson Township has seen its share of trouble in recent memory. A multi-vehicle crash near Burtner Road shut down part of the highway in March 2025, an incident in which a woman was killed near that same intersection, according to Butler Eagle. Months later, in December 2025, a crash at Route 356 and Great Belt Road temporarily closed the road again, the outlet reported separately.

Pennsylvania drivers involved in crashes that damage an attended vehicle or property are bound by specific legal obligations. Section 3743 of the state's vehicle code addresses accidents involving damage to an attended vehicle or property, according to the Pennsylvania General Assembly. A related provision, Section 3744, establishes the duty to give information and render aid.

Investigators have not released additional details about the identities of the drivers involved in the fleeing vehicles. Residents who use the Bonniebrook and Route 356 corridor may want to keep an eye out as state police continue looking into what happened.
