A man was found bleeding along State Route 29 north of Hofacker Lane near Lower Lake on the night of Oct. 17, 2023, after callers reported seeing him wave his arms to flag down passing cars. He was later identified as 33-year-old Andrew Gurrola, and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. Nearly three years later, no one has been arrested, and investigators still do not have the gun.
Gunshots Reported in the Area
The California Highway Patrol's Northern Division Major Crimes Unit is renewing its appeal for public help in the case, according to kymkemp.com. Dispatchers received a report at about 8:45 p.m. that night, describing a man with blood on his face trying to flag down vehicles on SR-29, per the same account. A third caller reported hearing gunshots in the area around the same time, the outlet reported.
An autopsy and evidence collected at the scene determined that Gurrola died from gunshot wounds, Redheaded Blackbelt's report states. At the time emergency crews responded, though, the full picture was far from clear. As The Press Democrat reported on Oct. 30, 2023, a cause of death had not yet been released to the public, underscoring how long it took investigators to confirm what had happened to him.
No Suspect, No Weapon, Nearly Three Years Later
Investigators have neither identified a suspect nor recovered the firearm used in the killing, the kymkemp.com report notes. The CHP Northern Division's Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate the case, which remains open as detectives work to piece together what led to the shooting on that stretch of highway.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the CHP Northern Division at (916) 268-2282 or the CHP Ukiah Communications Center at (707) 467-4000, or to email [email protected], according to the report. Callers should reference case number F013-107-23 when they reach out.
