Saugatuck is about to get its first big culinary spotlight, and it's coming from a familiar face. Kristen Kish, the Michigan-raised chef and host of Bravo's Top Chef, will headline the inaugural Art Coast Food & Wine Festival, a three-day event running November 5-7 in Saugatuck/Douglas that organizers expect to draw roughly 1,000 attendees to a brand-new pavilion on the banks of the Kalamazoo River.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Kish is a Michigan native born in South Korea and raised in Kentwood, near Grand Rapids, and the paper notes she won Top Chef's tenth season before becoming the show's host in 2023, replacing Padma Lakshmi. The festival's own site, meanwhile, bills her as chef/partner of Arlo Grey in Austin, Texas, and a New York Times best-selling author. On one detail the sources don't agree: saugatuck.com describes Kish as a three-time Emmy nominee for hosting Top Chef, while the West Michigan Tourist Association and the Free Press each put the number at two.
The festival will unfold inside a new 16,000-square-foot pavilion in downtown Saugatuck overlooking the Kalamazoo River, per the tourist association's announcement. More than a dozen chefs are scheduled to take part, cooking, teaching, demonstrating and tasting at events spread across Saugatuck, Douglas and Fennville, the Free Press reports.
A Lineup Rooted in Michigan Kitchens
James Rigato, chef and owner of Mabel Gray in Hazel Park, is among the confirmed names, according to saugatuck.com. He's joined by John Vermiglio, chef and owner of Grey Ghost, Second Best and Basan in Detroit, and Little Ghost in Ferndale, as well as featured guest chefs John Manion and Elena Besser, the site notes. Other participants cited by the Free Press include Matt Busch of Lady Bird, Colin McPhee of Pumpernickel's, and Jenna Arcidiacono of Amore Trattoria Italiana in Comstock Park.
A dozen area wineries are also set to pour, including Crane's Winery, Fenn Valley Vineyards, Lake Michigan Vintners and Left Foot Charley, according to the Free Press. Modales Wines will offer its own add-on experience: optional winery tours at noon and 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6, per Modales Wines.
Three Days of Tastings, Dinners and Late-Night Parties
The festival opens Thursday, November 5, with an island-inspired party featuring music, exclusive wine tastings, craft beer and cocktails, while Friday also brings ticketed mini sessions covering coffee tasting, cooking classes, winery tours and oil painting, the Free Press reports. That same Friday evening, the riverside pavilion transforms into Club Sugar, offering sparkling wine tastings, espresso martinis, coffee, desserts, late-night bites and music.
The centerpiece arrives Saturday, Nov. 7, with the Grand Tasting — an all-inclusive, four-hour event emceed by Kish herself, per the Free Press. It will include live cooking and wine demonstrations with nearly a dozen local chefs, and every attendee reportedly receives a complimentary signed copy of Kish's memoir, Accidentally on Purpose. MLive describes the Grand Tasting as an all-inclusive affair featuring regional wines, demonstrations and entertainment throughout the afternoon. The festival also includes five-course collaboration dinners and a restaurant showcase offering a curated prix fixe dinner with beverage pairings at participating restaurants throughout the Art Coast, according to the event's restaurant showcase page.
Tickets and the Bigger Picture for the Region
Three-day festival passes start at $400 and are available through saugatuck.com, with add-ons offered for exclusive dinner events and VIP options, the Free Press notes. Organizers behind the event told the Holland Sentinel the festival aims to elevate the region's reputation as a destination for food, wine and authentic local experiences, positioning it as a showcase for chefs, restaurants, wineries and farms from Saugatuck, Douglas, Fennville and the surrounding area, according to The Holland Sentinel.
With a Michigan-raised celebrity chef at the helm and a new riverside venue built specifically for the occasion, the Art Coast Food & Wine Festival is positioning its debut weekend as a marker for how the Saugatuck/Douglas area wants to be seen going forward — not just a summer lakeside getaway, but a stop on the culinary map.
