Charlotte Ayanna, the actress remembered for playing Ethan Hawke's wife in Training Day, was arrested in West Hollywood after allegations that she kicked a sheriff's deputy and spread cremated human remains inside a home. She is now facing three separate misdemeanor charges stemming from the October 8 incident, and she is held on $50,000 bail.
According to TMZ, deputies were responding to a welfare-check call when the situation escalated. An alleged victim told deputies that Ayanna had threatened his life, battered him, and spread cremated human remains inside the residence, according to cops. Authorities allege that during the course of the investigation, Ayanna kicked a deputy.
Ayanna, who was born Charlotte Lopez, was arrested on suspicion of criminal threats, elder abuse, battery on a peace officer, and depositing human remains outside of a cemetery, per the same TMZ report. Prosecutors ultimately filed three misdemeanor counts on October 12: battery, elder or dependent adult abuse, and battery on a peace officer.
What the Charges Actually Carry
Each of the counts against Ayanna draws from a distinct section of California law. Under California Penal Code Section 243(b), battery against a peace officer actively engaged in official duties is a misdemeanor carrying up to one year in county jail and a fine of up to $2,000, according to FindLaw.
The elder abuse count falls under California Penal Code Section 368, which makes it a misdemeanor to willfully subject a person aged 65 or older to unjustifiable physical or mental suffering or endangerment, with a potential penalty of up to one year in county jail, per the Shouse Law Group. The allegation regarding the scattered remains connects to California Health and Safety Code Section 7054, which classifies depositing or disposing of human remains anywhere other than a designated cemetery without legal authorization as a misdemeanor, according to Justia.
Ayanna Disputes Her Arrest
Ayanna has publicly pushed back on how her arrest was handled. She said it was “an unfair illegal false arrest,” adding, “Not only was I never read my rights, including the Miranda rights, but I was never even interviewed to talk to,” according to TMZ's report.
The welfare check and subsequent arrest were handled by deputies, since the City of West Hollywood does not maintain an independent municipal police force. Instead, the city contracts all local law enforcement services through the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which operates through the West Hollywood Station, according to the City of West Hollywood.
From Foster Care to the Miss Teen USA Crown
Long before her arrest made headlines, Ayanna's life story carried its own share of hardship and reinvention. Born Charlotte Lopez, she spent time in the foster care system across multiple foster homes after her birth mother had schizophrenia, an experience she detailed in her 1996 co-authored memoir Lost in the System, according to FosterClub.
She later adopted the surname Ayanna after learning that Lopez was her maternal grandfather's surname, the same FosterClub profile notes. Representing Vermont, she won the Miss Teen USA title in August 1992 at age 15.
Her acting career took off not long after, most notably with her role as Lisa, wife of rookie LAPD officer Jake Hoyt, played by Ethan Hawke, in Antoine Fuqua's 2001 film Training Day. The film starred Denzel Washington, and Ayanna also appeared in Love the Hard Way opposite Adrien Brody, per TMZ's report.
