Trinity Repertory Company is sending Ebenezer Scrooge back into the hands of an old favorite for its milestone anniversary. Mauro Hantman, who played Scrooge in Trinity Rep's 2010 production of A Christmas Carol, has been cast in the title role for the company's 50th annual staging of the Charles Dickens classic, running Nov. 5 through Dec. 31 at Trinity Rep's Dowling Theater.
Hantman previously played Scrooge in the company's 2010 production, according to a Providence Journal photo retrospective, and he returned to the role for the company's 47th annual production after a gap, per Trinity Rep, which noted it marked his first time back in the part since 2010.
This year's staging is directed and choreographed by Taavon Gamble, a resident company member at Trinity Rep, according to the theater's own production page. The production is based on the Dickens novella and features original music by Richard Cumming, a score that has anchored Trinity Rep's annual retelling.
A Cast Built Around Longtime Company Members
Alongside Hantman, the cast includes Jackie Davis as the Ghost of Christmas Present and Mrs. Fezziwig, Kevin Patrick Martin as Jacob Marley and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, and Mathieu Myrick as Bob Cratchit. Martinez Napoleon plays Mr. Fezziwig, Myranda Rose Silva plays Mrs. Cratchit, and Jennifer Ellis takes on the Solicitor and Schoolmistress roles. John Shuman plays the Ghost of Christmas Past, David Ensor plays Nephew Fred and Young Scrooge, Kate Fitzgerald plays Belle and Lucy, and Giselle plays Mrs. Dilber.
The production's understudies include Maria Noriko Cabral, Aiden Day, Molly Donovan, Matthew Desorcy, and Ricky Waugh. A children's cast drawn from across the region rounds out the company, with young performers including Nola Colantonio of Riverside, Ari Huggins of Warren, Jameson Jannerelli of Rumford, Tess Loezos and Gabriel Taveras of Cranston, Coleman Luse of North Providence, Stevie Sheally of Exeter, and Trinity Williams of Providence.
Behind the scenes, Otto Vogel serves as music director, Tanya Orellana as scenic designer, William Andrew Young as costume designer, and Erica Lauren Maholmes as lighting designer. Peter Sasha Hurowitz served as sound designer for Trinity Rep's 47th annual production. Mark Rose rounds out the creative team as stunt coordinator.
New Leadership Marks the Production's Golden Anniversary
Meredith McDonough was Trinity Rep's incoming artistic director in May 2026. The milestone arrives amid a broader leadership shift at the company; the Providence Journal described the 2026-27 season as one of transition.
The 2026-27 season features six shows, according to WPRI, which reported that the season was shaped by both Curt Columbus and incoming artistic director Meredith McDonough. WPRI also reported that all of this season's productions will be staged in the Dowling Theater while the company's Chace Theater continues renovations.
Trinity Rep's own season page frames the anniversary production as a celebration of the company's tradition of reimagining the Dickens story anew each year.
