Trumbull defeated Warde 3-1 on Friday, Oct. 23, according to MaxPreps. Earlier that month, the team recognized a member of its program who has been unable to play this season.

A season on the sidelines

After Trumbull beat Darien 3-0 on Oct. 15, the team gave its Eddie the Eagle player-of-the-game statue to Cydney Whitney, a 15-year-old sophomore manager. She had not appeared in a match that season, the Connecticut Post reported.

Whitney is receiving treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma while continuing to attend school and remain involved with the varsity team, the Connecticut Post reported. A treatment port prevents her from playing for now. Her treatments are scheduled to finish in December, and she hopes to return to club volleyball after the port is removed.

Purple support at the Darien match

Trumbull players had worn purple shoelaces during the season. For the Oct. 15 match, both teams wore purple warmups and hair ties, and fans wore purple in the gym. Coach Nicole Trommelen arranged the joint gesture with Darien; other schools also sent Whitney baskets and messages, according to the Connecticut Post.
