Kaamel Hasaun Mathis, the 47-year-old Detroit filmmaker known as Diezel, was stopped on Interstate 75 in London, Kentucky, shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday. A Laurel County Sheriff's deputy reported seeing his gray Dodge Durango weave across lanes.
According to reporting by theJasmineBRAND, citing local police reports, the traffic stop led deputies to arrest Mathis on suspicion of driving under the influence. Beyond the DUI charge, authorities also cited him for possessing an open alcoholic beverage container inside the vehicle and improper lane usage, and they served him with an outstanding Laurel District Court bench warrant for failure to appear, as reported by PRIMETIMER.
Mathis was booked into the Laurel County Correctional Center.
What the Open-Container Citation Means
Kentucky law defines an open alcoholic beverage container as a receptacle containing any amount of alcohol that is open, has a broken seal, or has had some contents removed. KRS 189.530 addresses possession of such a container in a vehicle’s passenger area on a public highway, according to the Kentucky General Assembly. The arrest and citations are allegations, not findings of guilt. The open-container citation is separate from the DUI allegation; neither establishes a conviction.
A Detroit Film Career
Mathis began his career as a rapper in Detroit before moving into filmmaking, according to Vocal's The King of Tubi Got Pulled Over on I-75. The report says he made films in the city through Diezel Power Filmz and has written, directed, produced, and acted in more than 20 films, including his first feature, *Undying Love*, as well as *Price of Love* and *The Black Men Don't Cheat* trilogy.
His credits include *McGraw Ave*. IMDb data cited by theJasmineBRAND lists Mathis with more than 100 acting credits, including roles in *Master Dragon* and *White Lies*.
Tubi's Growing Audience
Tubi said in a June 2025 corporate announcement that it had more than 100 million monthly active users and accounted for 2.2% of total U.S. television viewing time. The Reel Noire Network has described free, ad-supported platforms such as Tubi as an important commercial outlet for independent Black filmmakers seeking distribution outside traditional studio systems.
The Case in Laurel County
As of Vocal's report, Mathis had not publicly addressed the stop, and authorities had not said whether a breath or blood test was administered. Neither Mathis nor his representatives had issued a public statement at that time. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Vocal's report described booking, a bond hearing, and arraignment as steps in a Kentucky DUI case. Authorities have not reported any injuries in this traffic stop.
The case will move through the Laurel County court system, according to Vocal's report, and the stop, any test results, and the eventual plea will become public record in time.
