A 36-year-old man has been arrested nearly a month after a shooting erupted from a fight in a downtown Tulsa parking lot, leaving two men wounded, and investigators say he spent weeks quietly monitoring news coverage of his own case using an automated ChatGPT alert before officers caught up with him.
Tulsa police identified Jamarkko Jackson as the suspect in the Sept. 27 shooting near North Greenwood Avenue and East Archer Street, according to News On 6. Officers had responded shortly after midnight to reports of gunfire in a parking lot near 100 N. Greenwood Ave., the station reports. A separate News On 6 account of the same night says officers responded around 12:24 a.m. to the intersection of Archer Street and Greenwood Avenue, where they found a man with multiple gunshot wounds, while Fox23 placed the shooting around 12:54 a.m. in a parking lot near 10 North Greenwood Avenue. The exact time and address have not been reconciled across reports.
Two men were taken to separate hospitals with gunshot wounds after what police described as a physical altercation that preceded the shooting, per the same News On 6 account. Reports on the victims’ ages also diverge: one News On 6 story identified a 32-year-old gunshot victim, while Fox23 reported the two wounded men were 34 and 22 years old with wounds to their legs and lower body. Police said both men are expected to survive, according to News On 6.
Fight, Gunfire and a Scattering Crowd
Witnesses told investigators a fight broke out in the parking lot before multiple shots rang out, and the two men who were struck said they had been swept up in the altercation before hearing gunfire and running from the scene, the station's report states. Fox23 reported that witnesses and victims described hearing someone yell “gun” just before the shots were fired and the crowd scattered. Detectives collected evidence at the scene including .40 caliber shell casings and clothing, according to Fox23.
Investigators later obtained surveillance footage from the Greenwood Rising Black Wall Street History Center on Oct. 6, per the affidavit cited by News On 6. That footage reportedly showed a large fight breaking out in the parking lot near Greenwood Avenue and Archer Street, and investigators say a man wearing a white T-shirt and gray pants fired a gun into the crowd during the altercation. Police say that man was later identified as Jackson.
Digital Trail Led Investigators to a Suspect
According to the affidavit, investigators obtained a search warrant for Jackson's Google account and uncovered multiple emails from OpenAI containing search results and automatic updates referencing the Tulsa shooting and the police incident number. Investigators say Jackson searched for updates about the shooting on Oct. 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8, and that he had set up an automatic ChatGPT alert to keep tabs on the investigation.
An anonymous tip received by Tulsa Metro Crime Stoppers on Oct. 8 identified Jackson as the shooter, the station's report notes. The affidavit also states that Jackson purchased a Greyhound bus ticket from Tulsa to Oklahoma City around the same period investigators say he was monitoring the case online.
Booking and Prior Record
Jackson was booked into the Tulsa County Jail on Oct. 26 on two counts of assault and battery with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm, per the affidavit detailed by News On 6. The document states Jackson has an extensive criminal history, and the Oklahoma Department of Corrections identified him as a certified member of the 5-Deuce Red Mob gang. Court records cited in the affidavit list previous convictions involving robbery, firearms and drug offenses.
Details on Jackson's current court status, including any bond amount or scheduled hearing, were not available in the reporting reviewed. Those seeking updates on the case can check filings through the Tulsa County Court records system or OSCN.net dockets, and the Tulsa County Victim Witness Center offers a case-following service for those connected to the proceedings.
