Turnstile’s free Oct. 24 concert near the Washington Monument raised money for Human Concern International’s humanitarian work in Palestine, Sudan and Lebanon, according to The PRP. The Baltimore band’s hometown performance also closed its Never Enough Tour Pt. 2, Rolling Stone reported.
Donations and attendance
The fundraising total grew as the campaign continued: by Saturday evening, it had collected more than $182,000 from over 2,300 supporters toward a $200,000 target, according to WTOP. The PRP later reported that donations had topped $209,000; the goal listed then was $250,000.
Organizers put attendance at an estimated 60,000. The event reached capacity, and some concertgoers unable to enter watched from outside the venue barriers, The PRP reported.
Permits for large Mall events
Special events in National Mall and Memorial Parks require a permit, according to the National Park Service. Permit specialists consider available areas, participant numbers and other factors when determining an event’s location.
A local punk history
The concert came amid renewed punk activity at the Sylvan Theater near the Washington Monument. The Washington City Paper reported that a Sept. 26 Ward 1 Mutual Aid benefit featuring Glitterer, Posición Unida and Somebody’s Daughter was the first local punk show there since Fugazi played the venue in 1995.
