Two men ended up in the hospital Saturday after a shooting near 10th Avenue north of 22nd Street in Tucson, and police say two other men were detained as detectives work to piece together what happened. The Tucson Police Department has not announced any charges, and the investigation remains open as officers continue gathering evidence from the scene.
Officers responded to the report of gunfire in the area on October 10, according to KOLD, which reported the shooting. Police said two males were injured and transported to the hospital, while two other men were detained by officers at or near the scene. The station's report does not specify the current medical condition of the injured men or clarify whether the two detained individuals are considered suspects, witnesses, or something else entirely.
The intersection sits along a heavily traveled stretch of central Tucson. Per the City of Tucson, 22nd Street functions as a major east-west arterial corridor. South Tucson is an independent 1.2-square-mile incorporated city completely surrounded by Tucson, according to the City of South Tucson.
What Could Be at Stake Legally
Should investigators eventually bring charges tied to a firearm, Arizona law carries steep consequences. Committing an assault with a deadly weapon such as a firearm constitutes felony aggravated assault under Arizona Revised Statutes § 13-1204, which can carry mandatory prison time without the possibility of probation when designated as a dangerous offense, according to the Litwak Law Group.
Tucson's Broader Crime Picture
Tucson Police Department data from 2025 showed that local violent crime incidents rose nearly 18% during the city's hottest summer months, a pattern the Tucson Spotlight linked to sociological research tying extreme heat to heightened physical irritability and aggression.
Even so, Tucson police have pointed to recent investigative gains. Officials reported in February that centralizing non-fatal shooting investigations helped drive a 15% reduction in non-fatal shootings and produced an 84% solve rate for non-fatal shooting cases in 2025, AZ Luminaria reported. That track record may offer some reassurance to residents near 10th Avenue and 22nd Street as this latest case moves forward.
Police Are Asking the Public for Help
As is standard in active investigations, Tucson police asked anyone with information or video related to the shooting to come forward through 88-CRIME. Southern Arizona's 88-CRIME program, run in partnership with the Pima County Attorney's Office, offers anonymous tipsters cash rewards of up to $2,500 for information leading to a felon's arrest. KGUN reports that tips helped Southern Arizona law enforcement agencies make 83 arrests, clear 104 cases, and distribute $55,600 in privately funded rewards.
No further details about the circumstances of the shooting, the identities of those involved, or potential charges have been released. The Tucson Police Department has not said whether the two detained men have been released or remain in custody, and the investigation is ongoing.
