Two men are dead after gunshots rang out in the parking lot of Spartanburg's Comet Apartments Sunday night, with one victim pronounced dead at the scene and the second dying after being rushed to a hospital. Spartanburg Police say they have not released either man's identity, and the shooting remains under active investigation.
Officers responded at approximately 7:45 p.m. Sunday to a 911 call reporting multiple shots fired at the Comet Apartments parking lot at 127 Garner Road, according to the Spartanburg Police Department. Arriving officers found two men suffering from gunshot wounds; one was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second died after being transported to a local hospital for treatment, WSPA 7News reports.
Police have not released the names of either victim and say there is no known threat to the public connected to the shooting, per the same department statement. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Spartanburg Police Department at 864-596-2065.
A Busy Commercial Corridor Turned Crime Scene
The Comet Apartments complex sits directly across Garner Road from local commercial businesses, including a Buddy's Home Furnishings store at 120 Garner Road, according to the retailer's own location listing. The residential-commercial mix along that stretch means the shooting unfolded in a corridor many Spartanburg residents pass through daily for shopping and errands.
The Comet Apartments shooting left two men dead.
The Ongoing Investigation
The investigation into the shooting remains active.
Crime Below Its Long-Term Average
The shooting comes months after Spartanburg Police Chief Alonzo Thompson told City Council in February that total crimes in the city dropped 22 percent below the 10-year average in 2025, as reported by the Post and Courier. Aggravated assaults made up 76 percent of violent offenses citywide, and more than half of those involved firearms, Thompson's presentation showed.
Statewide, a Violence Policy Center report released in September found South Carolina's rate of women killed by men rose to 2.2 per 100,000 in 2024, with nearly 76 percent of those homicides committed with firearms, according to WLTX. That statistic reflects a different population than Sunday's shooting, which involved two male victims, but it underscores how firearms continue to drive the bulk of violent deaths across the state.
Hoodline reported on a fatal shooting of a baby in August 2025 in a story published September 26, 2026. No arrests have been announced in the Comet Apartments case, and the identities of both victims remain unreleased.
