A north Houston apartment complex turned into a crime scene and then a standoff zone Thursday night after a driver was shot while sitting in his vehicle, crashed into a tree and died at the scene. Police say two men are now in custody in connection with the killing, which happened around 9 p.m.
According to Click2Houston, the driver was shot while sitting inside his vehicle and crashed into a tree. Officers arriving at the scene found him suffering from gunshot wounds, and he was pronounced dead there.

Police Take Two Men Into Custody
A woman and the suspect’s mother got out safely, the station reported. One suspect was woken by officers and became combative; both men were taken into custody.
Homicide investigators have since taken over the case, which remains ongoing, the outlet reported. Police have not released the identities of the victim or the two men taken into custody, and the circumstances that led to the confrontation between the driver and the two men have not been disclosed.
A Shooting Amid a Broader Decline in Houston Violence
The killing comes even as citywide homicide numbers have been trending sharply downward. Houston recorded 95 homicides in the first half of 2026, a 38% drop from the 154 recorded over the same stretch in 2025, according to Axios. Robberies, aggravated assaults and rape cases all fell as well during that period, per the same report, part of a wider decline also seen among cities tracked by the Major Cities Chiefs Association.
HPD reported a 36.4% drop in homicides during the first quarter of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, as Houston Public Media reported, with 49 murders recorded in the city between January and March. Overall violent crime in Houston decreased by 18.9% from 2024 to 2025, HPD data cited in that report shows.
No further details on charges, bond or the investigation's next steps have been released. Homicide investigators continue to work the case, and police have given no timeline for when additional information might be made public.
