A 30-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man were shot just after 11:15 p.m. Sunday night at the corner of Lorraine and Hicks Streets in Red Hook, steps from Amazon's massive last-mile delivery station, and both victims remain hospitalized as investigators search for the gunmen who sped off in a white Nissan Altima.
The woman was shot once in the chest and the man was struck in the right shoulder before both were rushed to the hospital, according to PIX11, which first reported the shooting. Police have not said what led up to the gunfire, whether the attack was targeted, or whether it has any connection to the Amazon facility, the station reports. Investigators have taped off a section of the area as the search continues for two men believed to have fled the scene.
A Shooting at the Edge of Amazon's Brooklyn Footprint
The shooting unfolded directly outside Amazon's 640 Columbia Street facility, a 397,020-square-foot, multi-story last-mile delivery station the company leased in 2021 and which was the first operation of its kind on the East Coast, according to entity background compiled by Commercial Observer. The property changed hands in 2022 when CBRE Investment Management bought the distribution center for $330 million from developers DH Property Holdings and Goldman Sachs Asset Management, per reporting cited by CoStar. The scale of that investment underscores just how central the warehouse has become to Amazon's Brooklyn logistics network, even as questions remain about whether Sunday's shooting is connected to the facility at all.
The intersection where the victims were shot also sits immediately adjacent to the NYCHA Red Hook East Houses, a public housing complex made up of roughly 30 buildings and home to thousands of residents, according to background cited from Medium's Envelope City. That proximity places the shooting squarely between one of Brooklyn's largest commercial logistics operations and one of its largest residential communities.
Precinct Covers a Historically Quiet Corner of Brooklyn
The area falls under the jurisdiction of the NYPD's 76th Precinct, headquartered at 191 Union Street, which covers Red Hook, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, and parts of Gowanus. That command logged just 354 total crime complaints in 2025, ranking it among the lowest-volume precincts in Brooklyn, according to data compiled by Eufy. The shooting also comes amid a broader decline in gun violence across the borough: shooting incidents dropped 18% and shooting victims fell 10% year-to-date through August, per statistics from the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office.
Still, this is not the first violent incident reported at this specific corner. In May 2025, an MTA bus driver operating a B61 route was assaulted with a wrench at the same intersection of Lorraine and Hicks Streets, as reported by Brooklyn Patch. Red Hook residents and local stakeholders have also repeatedly raised concerns about the heavy volume of delivery trucks and vans moving through the Lorraine Street and Columbia Street corridors since Amazon's facility opened, according to the Brooklyn Eagle.
Investigation Continues Monday as Police Seek an Arrest
As of Monday morning, the investigation remained active with no arrests announced. Police have not disclosed a motive, and it is unclear whether the two men in the white Altima knew the victims or whether any arrests are imminent. Under New York Penal Law Section 120.10, first-degree assault involving a firearm causing serious physical injury is classified as a Class B violent felony, according to the New York State Senate, meaning any suspects eventually charged would face significant prison exposure.
The shooting adds to a string of serious violent crimes tied to Red Hook's industrial and commercial corridors. Last month, a Brooklyn judge handed down life without parole for a 2020 fatal shooting in an isolated industrial stretch of the neighborhood, showing that prosecutors have pursued serious charges in similar cases in the area before. No further details about the condition of the victims or the identities of the suspects have been released.
