A Jefferson County grand jury has indicted two teenagers in connection with the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Dannady Greene, who was shot near a JCPS bus stop on Beech Street in Louisville's Park DuValle neighborhood the morning of Aug. 25. Greene later died from her injuries, and the indictment returned Thursday marks the latest step in a case that has stretched from a quiet residential bus stop to a grand jury room nearly two months later.
Greene was pronounced dead at 5:37 a.m. on Aug. 31 at UofL Hospital, according to The Courier-Journal. The grand jury indicted Tayon Hassell and Akira Thompson on charges of murder, tampering with physical evidence and possession of a handgun by a minor, all listed as complicity counts, as reported by WDRB.
From Juvenile Suspects to an Adult Case
Hassell and Thompson were 16 and 17 years old at the time of the shooting, but one of the two has since turned 18, the station notes. That shift from minor to adult appears tied to why their names became public: per WLKY, their identities were released by the Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney once the case moved into adult court.
The two are scheduled to be arraigned Monday, Oct. 26, per the same account from WDRB. What happens at that hearing, and how the case proceeds afterward, remains to be seen.
Flock Cameras, a Hidden Gun and DNA Matches
Investigators leaned heavily on technology and forensic testing to build the case. Louisville Metro Police said Flock cameras helped locate and arrest the two suspects, and the same report describes how the cameras helped track the suspect vehicle as it traveled toward southern Indiana in the days after the shooting.
A search of an apartment turned up two handguns, with one hidden inside an HVAC system that investigators identified as the murder weapon, according to the station's earlier report from early September. Five days after that search, further DNA testing matched evidence to the two suspects who had been detained at the apartment, the outlet reported.
The case moved quickly in its early stages, with two teenagers arrested and charged with murder within roughly a week of the shooting, before the investigation culminated in Thursday's grand jury indictment nearly two months later. Dannady Greene was shot at her own bus stop on a school morning, an attack that disrupted a Park DuValle neighborhood routine as mundane as waiting for the bus. Details of what led to the shooting, including any motive, have not been made public in the reporting reviewed.
