Two Zephyrhills men are dead after their vehicles collided nearly head-on early Monday morning on U.S. 301 in Thonotosassa, an unincorporated stretch of Hillsborough County where several deadly crashes have struck in recent years. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Florida Highway Patrol information cited by yahoo.com, the crash happened around 5:45 a.m. near Stacy Road when a 55-year-old Zephyrhills man driving a Kia Rio pulled out to pass other vehicles and entered the southbound lane. The Kia then collided nearly head-on with a Dodge Avenger driven by a 26-year-old Zephyrhills man, the outlet reported.
Tampa Free Press reported that troopers described the Dodge as traveling northbound at the time of impact. Yahoo's account of the same investigation, however, says the 26-year-old Dodge driver was heading south — a discrepancy in the reporting that has not been resolved in the available information.

Both drivers sustained fatal injuries in the collision and died at the scene, per the Florida Highway Patrol's account relayed by yahoo.com. The Highway Patrol has not released either man's name, and the agency's investigation into the crash remains open.
No additional details — including vehicle speeds, weather conditions, witness accounts, or any citation or fault determination — have been made public as of Monday's reporting.
A Troubled Stretch of Highway
Monday's crash adds to a string of recent fatal incidents along U.S. 301 in the Tampa Bay area. In October 2025, an 80-year-old woman was killed on the same highway in Hillsborough County after a driver reportedly suffered a medical emergency and began traveling the wrong way, according to WFLA. In April, an Apollo Beach man died in a rollover crash on U.S. 301 after the BMW he was driving collided with the rear of a Ford Escape, as reported by Tampa Bay 28.
The highway's dangers have not been limited to Hillsborough County. In September, a 37-year-old St. Petersburg man died after being struck by two tractor-trailers on U.S. 301 in Alachua County after leaving a crashed vehicle on the roadside, according to News4JAX. Hoodline previously reported on two Cocoa pedestrians killed while crossing the same highway near Elm Fair Boulevard in Hillsborough County.
Tracking Crash Patterns
Hillsborough County maintains an online Safety Dashboard that tracks fatal and severe-injury traffic crashes in the county's unincorporated areas, according to hcfl.gov. The county also runs a Corridor Safety Program that uses historical transportation data to identify roadway corridors with frequent high-injury and fatal crashes, the county says. Statewide, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles collects and analyzes crash data to inform public-safety policy, per flhsmv.gov.
The Florida Highway Patrol's investigation into Monday's crash continues, and no further information about the identities of the two men has been released.
