A University of Hawaii at Manoa student reported being sexually assaulted inside a residence hall room Sunday after a person they had recently matched with on a dating app showed up with someone else in tow. The student told university officials that the second person was the one who assaulted them. UH has referred the case to the Honolulu Police Department, and the investigation remains active.

A Dating App Meetup Takes a Dangerous Turn

According to KITV, the student invited a person they had recently met on a dating app to their dorm room on Oct. 4; that person was not affiliated with the university. When the invited match arrived, they brought along a second person. The student identified that second individual as the one who sexually assaulted them, per the same report.

The student did not report the incident right away. As Hawaii News Now reported, the student filed a report with the university. KITV reported the student filed it two days later, on Tuesday, Oct. 6. UH campus officials said the accompanying person was the one alleged to have carried out the assault, and the case was then turned over to Honolulu police for investigation.

University Response and Ongoing Investigation

UH referred the matter to the Honolulu Police Department, and the station's report notes the case remains under investigation, with no update yet on its status. The university notified students about the incident and has asked anyone with information to come forward. UH Manoa's Department of Public Safety can be reached at 808-956-6911 for tips related to the case.

This is not the first time UH Manoa has dealt with an allegation involving an outside acquaintance brought into student housing. A notice from the University of Hawaii at Manoa Department of Public Safety described a case from October 2025 in which a resident said they were forcibly sexually assaulted by an acquaintance who was not a UH student after inviting that person to their residence hall room. In that earlier case, the department said the suspect's whereabouts were unknown and that he may still have been staying in the residence halls alongside other students.

Resources and Reporting Options

UH Manoa has provided resources for reporting incidents and counseling for students affected by the current case. Per the university's sexual assault information page, a sexual assault can be reported to Honolulu police by calling 911 or to UH Manoa's Department of Public Safety, which says it operates 24 hours a day. Contacting HPD is not required to receive services; the department states it will respect a survivor's decision not to involve local police.

Support services listed by the university include the Mānoa Advocate and the Counseling and Student Development Center. Reporting and counseling resources are available through UH Manoa's Department of Public Safety website for students who may need them in the wake of this case.
