United Way of Rhode Island is turning 100 years old, and it's celebrating with downtown Providence's biggest stage: a full WaterFire lighting. The nonprofit's Grand Centennial Celebration takes over the WaterFire footprint on Saturday, October 17, with activities starting at 4 p.m. and the signature river lighting following that evening.
The celebration is WJAR reports, timed to a milestone year for the organization: in 2026, United Way of Rhode Island marks a full century of service to communities across the state, according to uwri100.org. The site describes the October 17 gathering as a chance to come together “alongside the iconic WaterFire for a once-in-a-century celebration.”
Per the same organizational page, the event is billed as “a family-friendly evening” that will “activate the WaterFire footprint and surrounding downtown with nonprofit partners, volunteer activities, music, storytelling, and a special VIP experience” for supporters and sponsors. Organizers say the night is meant to express community, generosity, possibility, and standing together for a strong Rhode Island, per WJAR's report. Tens of thousands of Rhode Islanders are expected to turn out, though that figure reflects organizer expectations rather than a confirmed attendance count.
How the Evening Will Unfold
WaterFire Providence confirms the full lighting will happen at 4 North Main Street, with onshore programming and vendors opening at 5 p.m. and the event running until 11 p.m., according to waterfire.org. United Way's own activities, including family- and kid-friendly programming and a letter-writing station, begin at 4 p.m. in Memorial Park, the WaterFire site notes.
Music kicks off early too: the WaterFire schedule lists The Search performing on the College Street Stage starting at 4 p.m., with Funkademic playing the Steeple Street Stage. Dozens of local organizations will also set up at the United Way Resource Fair near the Waterplace Park Basin and the Washington Street Bridge, offering residents information and resources throughout the evening.
The Lighting Itself
The centerpiece of the night arrives once dusk settles in. WaterFire boats are set to begin their procession at 6:17 p.m., with the lighting itself starting a minute later at 6:18 p.m. in the Waterplace Park Basin, igniting more than 80 braziers along the river. WJAR's coverage notes the lighting is expected to begin around 6 p.m., broadly consistent with that more precise schedule.
The event listing on visitrhodeisland.com places the gathering at 4 North Main Street in Providence. United Way of Rhode Island is encouraging everyone to attend the celebration, according to WJAR, and more details on the evening's full schedule are available on the WaterFire event page.
The WaterFire tie-in is one piece of a broader centennial push this year. United Way of Rhode Island's 2026 United Across Rhode Island Tour has been connecting with residents in all 39 cities and towns through community events throughout the year, according to uwri100.org, making Saturday's downtown Providence gathering the capstone of that statewide effort.
