A van crashed into a light pole at the Veterans Memorial Triangle on the edge of the City Island Bridge on Monday afternoon, injuring one person and sending the pole crashing down across the war memorial itself. The crash happened at the intersection of Bridge Street and City Island Avenue, a spot residents have long complained is a dangerous chokepoint for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians alike.
The FDNY reported that the crash happened just after 4 p.m. Monday, according to News 12 Bronx. One person was injured in the collision and taken to the hospital, though that person's medical condition remains unknown. By Tuesday, a day after the crash, the downed light pole was still sprawled across the memorial, a visible reminder of the impact.
DOT Vows Repairs as Pole Remains Down
The New York City Department of Transportation said the infrastructure damaged in the crash will be repaired or replaced, per the same News 12 report. No timeline for that work has been provided. The triangle sits right where the City Island Bridge meets the mainland, a junction that funnels traffic on and off the island through a single, narrow approach.
City Island neighbors described the intersection as particularly dangerous even before Monday's crash. Resident Tom Raneri called it a bottleneck, and suggested staffing the crosswalk and ticketing drivers who make improper turns there. Another neighbor, Carlos Reyes, proposed installing a stop sign or requiring drivers to slow to 15 miles per hour through the area. Naima Priestly, also from the area, urged drivers to simply slow down near the bridge.
A Bridge With a Troubled Recent History
Monday's crash is the latest in a string of incidents near the span connecting City Island to the mainland Bronx. At least three nearby crashes have been reported since a cyclist collision last July, according to New York City data cited in the same report. In that July incident, a 57-year-old cyclist was critically injured after being struck by a 2023 Honda while biking across the City Island Bridge, as reported by the New York Daily News. Medics rushed that cyclist to Jacobi Medical Center in critical condition, and the Honda driver remained at the scene and was not arrested.
The bridge has also been the site of a fatal hit-and-run. A 27-year-old woman was fatally struck while riding her bike west over the City Island Bridge near Cross Street, according to Gothamist, which reported that a white Hyundai sedan struck her before fleeing the scene.
Infrastructure Upgrades Have Targeted the Area
City Island has seen some infrastructure attention in recent months. The Department of Transportation repaved several portions of roadway around Pelham Bay Park over the past year following advocacy from the group City Island Rising, according to the Bronx Times. The most recent of those projects resurfaced part of the Hutchinson River Parkway exit ramp leading to City Island, the third such roadway improvement completed within the park in that span, following a partial resurfacing of City Island Road finished in December 2024.
City agencies also repaired 25 street lamps in the park over the summer and addressed recurring flooding in select areas, the Bronx Times reported. Separately, a 2013 City Island transportation study from the city's transportation agency recommended installing a pedestrian crosswalk, two ADA ramps and a stop bar at the memorial crossing, along with a ban on westbound Bridge Street traffic turning left onto City Island Avenue — though it is not established whether those recommendations were ever carried out.
For now, the toppled pole remains a stark marker at the gateway to City Island, with residents hoping Monday's crash spurs the kind of lasting fix they say the intersection has needed for years.
