A 43-year-old man identified as Richard Murillo was pronounced dead at a home in the 800 block of 102nd Street after a shooting in the Vermont Vista section of South Los Angeles was reported at about 8:45 p.m. Sunday. It was not immediately clear whether Murillo lived at the home where he was found. Just five minutes earlier, a separate shooting at a nearby 7-Eleven left another man hospitalized, and investigators are now trying to determine whether the two incidents are connected.
Victim Identified, Circumstances Still Unclear
Murillo was publicly identified as the man killed in the shooting, according to MyNewsLA.com. The outlet reported that an update on the hospitalized man's condition from the earlier 7-Eleven shooting was not immediately available. Murillo died in the shooting.
The second shooting took place at a 7-Eleven in the 1000 block of Vermont Avenue, MyNewsLA reported. News video from the scene showed three people being detained there, though it remains unclear what role, if any, they played in either shooting. Investigators were looking into the possibility that the two shootings were related, but no determination had been reported as of Tuesday.
A Violent Stretch for the Neighborhood
The Saturday afternoon shooting occurred months before Sunday's incident. A man was shot to death in the Vermont Vista area of South Los Angeles, according to Patch, which reported that the shooting occurred about 3:20 p.m. on Colden Avenue near Baring Cross Street, citing LAPD Sgt. C. Savedra.
A woman in her 20s was fatally shot while sleeping inside her Vermont Vista home, according to KTLA, which reported that an unknown suspect fired at least one shot through her bedroom window, striking her while she was in bed.
Investigators were trying to determine whether Sunday's shootings were connected.
