A man smashed through the front door of Good Friend Coffee on the 800 block of Virgil Avenue in East Hollywood at 6:13 a.m. Tuesday, October 6, 2026, rifled through the area behind the register, and walked out with nothing more than a shirt and hat. No arrest has been made.
The shop posted a request for help identifying the man, saying he broke into the business and stole the blue hat and shirt, according to a social media post cited by KTLA. Security-camera footage shows the man returning to the front of the store empty-handed before exiting through the shattered glass door, per the same report. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed it responded to the scene and said a male adult entered the location and stole merchandise, though the suspect's age and the value of what was taken remain unknown.
Good Friend Coffee opened in late 2024, founded by Max Rand, a coffee industry veteran with a decade of experience including five years at Alfred Coffee, who built the shop as a community gathering space after noticing Virgil Village lacked a standalone specialty coffee spot, according to WhatNow. The shop's interior was designed in partnership with the Klein Agency, and it sits along the border of East Hollywood and Virgil Village, the outlet notes.
A Distinctive Coffee Menu
Good Friend Coffee's distinctive menu includes its signature peanut butter and jelly latte, according to the Los Angeles Times.
LAPD believes the same man may be responsible for a separate burglary that occurred that morning around 6:37 a.m. at a bar on the 600 block of Hoover Street, also in Los Angeles, per the department's account relayed through KTLA's reporting.
Part of a Broader Pattern Citywide
Mayor Karen Bass said residential and commercial burglaries were down 30% in 2026 compared with 2025, according to CBS News.
Still, LAPD incident statistics show 2,974 non-residential commercial burglaries were recorded citywide throughout 2025, per data cited by Guardian National Security. The vast majority happened overnight, with 68.5% occurring between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. and more than half between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., the firm's analysis found. Only 9.0% of those cases were cleared by arrest, meaning nearly 90% went unsolved.
What Charges Could Look Like
Under California law, breaking into a business outside operating hours with intent to steal is classified as commercial burglary under Penal Code § 459 regardless of the value of what's taken, a distinction from the misdemeanor shoplifting statute that covers thefts under $950 during normal business hours, according to Goldstein Law Group. Commercial burglary is prosecuted as a wobbler offense under the same statute, meaning prosecutors can pursue it as a misdemeanor carrying up to a year in jail or a felony carrying up to three years in county jail, per Eisner Gorin LLP.
LAPD described the person as a male adult and has not announced an arrest in either the Virgil Avenue or Hoover Street incidents. Good Friend Coffee asked for help identifying the man as investigators look into whether the two break-ins are connected.
