An 11-year-old girl was seriously injured Monday afternoon when the bicycle she was riding was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene in Wallingford. Officers responded around 4:20 p.m. to the intersection of Washington Street and Hosford Street after a report that a bicyclist had been hit, and found the girl unconscious and suffering from serious injuries.
According to the Hartford Courant, police said the girl was taken to an area hospital for treatment, though her condition was not immediately clear. As reported by Patch, officers believe the girl was struck by a possibly older-model SUV traveling southbound on Washington Street at the time of the crash.
Girl Taken To Hospital
The girl was taken to a hospital for treatment. Her condition had not been released, per the station's report.
Police described the vehicle involved as an older-model, dark-colored SUV, possibly black or gray, and said the driver did not stop after striking the girl. The South-Central Traffic Unit has taken over the investigation, and officers are continuing to search for the driver who fled the scene.
Police Seek Tips As Search Continues
Anyone with information about the collision or the driver is asked to contact Officer Anthony Duhamel at 203-294-2669, or submit an anonymous tip through the Wallingford Police Department's website.
The Wallingford case follows another recent hit-and-run involving a cyclist. In New Haven, a 53-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run crash in August, with officers finding the vehicle involved unoccupied, according to a separate Patch report. State transportation officials have also flagged a broader rise in bicycle fatalities, noting that bicycle deaths increased 67 percent in 2025 compared with the five-year average, with speeding cited as a leading factor in serious crashes, per the Connecticut Department of Transportation.
For now, the search for the driver who left an 11-year-old girl unconscious on a Wallingford street continues, with investigators relying on the public to help identify the dark SUV seen leaving the area.
